Four days ago, Peanut went to the vet for a check-up and he said she was completely healthy and had a clear check. However, I took her out tonight to clean her cage and left her on the table in a big popcorn bowl (what I usually do when i clean it, she can't climb out of it). While cleaning, I noticed she was making little squeaking sounds every so often. Now, she's never done this before and this is the first I've heard it. Is she sick? Should I be worried? :(

I wouldn't be worried my little Marigold does it all the time :)..she seems to do it alot when she is happy or excited :D so I'm guessing its a good thing when they do it ..Maybe someone else can help both of us out..But I think its a happy thing

Hi,
I think little chirps are sounds of happiness. Shrieks or cries are obviously sounds of pain. Yep. I just checked in my pet owner's guide. It says, "Loud screaming- A hedgehog that is in danger or severe pain lets out a loud scream that can set your teeth on edge. Chirping or Squeaking- These sounds are made by lively youngsters and are sounds of contentment." Hope this helps.

The loud scream is called "the hedgie scream of death". It can also happen when they are totally pee'd off at something.

My first hedgehog Wally would do that all the time! I would put a few live mealies in his cage during the day and he would "hunt" for them in the evening. They would all wiggle their underneath his wheel. He would "scream" until I would come flying into the room to see what was happening. Once I lifted his wheel so he could get at his remaining mealies, he would go about his business like nothing happened.

Emma did it once. She was mad about something but I can't remember what. It is an awful sound and makes you think something is killing them.
