I brought home a new little bundle of joy today :) though I've owned a hedgehog for quite some time, I've never encountered a baby before! I got my first when she was a year old.
A few minutes ago she started squeaking out of nowhere. I have NEVER heard this. Is this normal? Is it a sign of pain, stress, happiness, or what? Is it just something babies do?

Mine will both squeak a little now and then, and they are both under a year old.

Have you noticed if it's for any particular reason that they start to squeak, or are they just making noise? :)

Hi Bumblebean,
Babies usually squeak to see if their mom or siblings are around. Its quit normal.

I have heard that they squeak for different reasons. You just have to assess the situation.
Jake squeaks at night. Loudly. He is 1 1/2 years old and I have had him for about 3 months. When he first did it I thought he was hurt. I bolted out of bed to check on him, but he was fine. Just poking around his cage. I thinks he just likes to hear himself. Or he wants company. Or he likes to get the dog all excited. I don't think it is a bad noise when he does it.
As long as she was acting fine otherwise, I'd take it as a squeak of contentment.

How old is your hedgehog? If he is very young and was just weaned, he is probably missing his mom and siblings. Do you have any small stuffed animals? The Prickles Beanie Baby works great for a fake "mommy". (please don't hurt me, all of you Beanie Baby addicts. ;)). They are appropriate size, and weight for a single youngster to snuggle up to for comfort.
