Ok.. just today I received a certified package in the mail from the USDA saying "It has come to our attention that you may be conducting activities that would require you to be licensed or registered with us."
WHO would do this?? WHO would bring it to there attention?? WHY would it be brought to there attention??All I have done was ask questions about breeding.. IF I WERE TO BREED.. I never said I was going to.. I am doing like a lot of you have suggested, I am researching.. I am making sure it is what I want to do..
Ive looked into being USDA licensed for when and if the time comes I decide to breed..
I have 3 hedgehogs.. 1 male (petstore bought) 1 older female (possibly to old and to fat for a breeder) that comes from a USDA licensed breeder and 1 young female that comes from a USDA licensed breeder.. So that leaves me with basicaly 1 hedgie that I will MAYBE breed in the future..
According to what I have been reading, I do not need to be licensed even if I do decide to breed her.. Unless the laws change again..
I dont appreciate people assuming im going to be doing something..
Thats my rant for the day.. Im not pointing fingers at anyone.. im not blaming anyone.. im just annoyed that someone would do this.

Alicia, I am in full support of you. Being my friend and all , it seems that certain people are trying to start trouble. :banghead:
And for what reason I am not sure.
But is just goes to show you that some people have nothing better to do! OR WE can only hope that it is some kind of error. I cannot imagine anybody doing soemthing like this. I am sure most hedgie breeders all want one thing which would be to improve the Breed. :D WE should all be in support of each other. I would totaly be upset like yourself.
But since we know that you have know reason to have USDA lisence,
we will be just :D happy happy happy happy happy

Hey... I would just ignore that... Some people may have anything better to do then turn you in, but really you haven't done anything wrong. Don't pay attention to that stuff. I think you are doing good by asking questions first! Glad you are doing it the RIGHT way instead of just ignoring the importance of research and going about getting your USDA alone and not sure of what you are really doing. Congrats hun! :applause:

Interesting. There are so many *other* people on this board that are way more deserving of being turned into the USDA for unorthodox breeding of hedgies (and other animals!). Personally it makes me sick that someone (you) who had no intention of breeding recieved this notice in the mail, when other people who actually followed through with their actions got nothing. Although- I cant say I blame the USDA- it is slightly comforting to know that they do follow up on these kinds of things- even if they are a complete dead end.
Toss it aside and keep up the good work of being a hedgie mom :)

Ok.. I found out what happened.. The breeder I got my last baby from had a suprise inspection.. The USDA person took names and address of everyone she has sold to..
She told me this happend and that I may be contacted, but I was expecting a call or a letter inquiring about her.. Not a letter saying that I was conducting business without a license..
So.. thanks everyone for your show of support..

I am very glad to hear this!
As I was reading your opening post, I couldn't help but to wonder who on this board would have turned ANYONE in to the USDA.
Although there may be people on this board who state that they want to breed, or even that they ARE breeding hedgies, there is simply no way to ascertian that as fact and not just someone yanking chains. To turn someone in to the USDA having only an internet message board as proof just dosen't make any sense. One can say anything one wants on a message board, that dosen't make it true. Besides, the last time I looked, a license was only required if one had three or more breeding females.
Either way, I can certainly understand your anger thinking that someone here would have done that.
Glad it turned out like it did! :)
