I've had Zeek for almost four weeks now and we've been waiting to see him annoint (seen the pictures and it's just too cute!). He hasn't even attempted it as far as we know. Not even new and unusual smells get him going.

Some hedgies never annoint and some annoint over everything. He may be annointing without your knowledge too.
Frodo has never annointed (that I know of), Marco seldom and Odo annoints over everything from peas to a dog turd! :)

I know this may be a dumb question, but what does it mean when a hedgie annoints? I keep hearing that term and I have never known what it meant lol.

Sometimes when a hedgie comes across a new or interesting smell like hand lotion, leather just to name a few a hedgie will mouth it and work up a glob of slobber on it and then proceed to twist itself into amazing positions trying to deposit the glob of slobber on it's back with it's tounge. The hedgie "annoints" itself with the new smell. Usually while doing this, the hedgie will ignore everything else around it. There are several theorys about why a hedgie does this but noone knows why for sure.

Annointing is when a hedgehog smells something new and licks it and then makes his spit into a froathy foam that he twists around and spreads on his quills.

I have never seen any of my little guys annoint. I have seen other males annoint though. Maybe my Guys are not old enough? Does anyone know at what age they do this? Or is it something that does not matter of age?
Blessings to all

I watched my 2 week old babies do it but Peaches was almost a year before she annointed for the first time. The only thing she will annoint over is nipple cream that I use on their dry ears. :)

I gave Herbie a little Valentines Day treat last night and gave him some of the roast beef I made and potatoes. He didn't touch the roast, but he scarfed up the potatoes. I was so excited! I ran to the kitchen to get another piece when my boyfriend cried "oh no!!" Here Herbie annointed all over his bottom with it :Pukey: I had a little Pokey Potato Butt!!! :D
I'll post pics of it later :)
