So, my wife and I are currently preparing for our first baby (hedgie, that is, of course!). When we decided to go ahead with this, about two weeks ago, we knew that our local breeder was going to be mating a pair of hogs soon. So we thought, great! Hedgehog gestation period is around 38 days (for this particular mother), and we'll have to wait, say seven weeks till the babies are weaned. That's no time at all!

But it's going oh so slowly... I can hardly wait! :) It's a good job we do have the time, though, because there's a lot of planning to be done. We already have a wheel and some toys picked out; but we're still working on the cage. I really like the C&C cages that I've seen: they're better looking than the commercial cages, and I think you get more floorspace (inside) for the same external footprint, too. The only problem is that a hoglet will be able to escape from the 1.5x1.5" holes in the cube panels. I'm wondering if we could cut the Correx/Coroplast higher around the edges, then trim it down when baby turns into adult, around six months?

But hey, I almost forgot to tell you the coolest part of all this: the parents finally got it on four days ago -- on 14 February. How romantic!

Hi, All of my cages are C&C cages and I basically made a pan out of the coroplast and none of mine can fit through the holes and the pan has about a 4" high edge to it. They will on ocasion put their paws on top of the edge but even my smallest cant fit more than his nose out.

when my piggie ACCIDENTIALLY had babies i didnt even think about them getting out of the cage cause i was so over whelmed. well i kept the wheel outside the cage and only let them use it supervised cause i didnt want mom to run on it and hurt them. anyway i was walking by my room and heard the wheel going which confused me cause i knew i hadnt left it in the cage. i opened the door to find that two of the babies had escaped and one was playing on the wheel while the other ran around on my floor!
ok so the moral of the story is they can get out and i think you will have to build up the sides fairly hight because i had mine up slightly high but i had climber pigs and they found a way out. you could just make your regular bottom and then make strips that you attach separatly around the cage it may look tacky but will be easier to remove later so that you dont have to try and cut the whole big thing
good luck
and congradulations to you and your partner on your new baby!!
