Hello! I just found out 1 1/2 weeks ago that I am pregnant with my first baby. I was wondering if anyone knew of any health concerns that I should worry about in terms of handling a hedgie when pregnant. I know with cats there is the Toxoplasmosis issue and I shouldn't be scooping my litter box, but I wondered if there was anything with hedgies? I'm pretty conscientious about washing my hands after I handle him and clean his cage anyway, but I was just wondering. Thanks for any info!!

I believe they can occasionally transmit salmonella. Very good soap and water hand washing should do the trick. You could also ask your OB Dr. at your next visit.

I owned hedgehogs through both of my pregnancies with absolutely no problem, and no concern on the behalf of my doctor. :)
