How long will a bag last?

El Boyfriend and i are thinking of getting a hedgehog after we move, so of course i have about a million questions, starting with:
About how quickly will a hedgehog consume a 3-4lb or 7lb bag of cat food? I've seen some good tips on freezing; about how long will the catfood last in the freezer?

Hmm, well I buy the small bags of cat food, so thats like 2.5 lbs per bag, and between 3 hedgies 6.5 lbs isnt even half way gone.

It will last you forever....really. Since Ive had Bosco (almost a year) Ive only had to buy food twice. I usually make enough mix to last a month or so, and then freeze the rest. Im sure the food can easily last up to a year in the freezer. Just make sure that you double bag it so it doesnt get freezer burn :)

Is the food as good as new when taken out of the freezer? I emailed a couple of the food manufacturers and they said the food did not freeze. I was kind of hoping it would as I only have one hedgie.

I am not sure why you would freeze it as its dry food so if you keep it in an airtight container it shouldnt go bad, but thats just me.

I've never had a problem with the food going bad. I keep it in ziploc bags or airtight containers. One bag lasts forever, especially if you only have one or two hedgehogs. They only eat like 2 tablespoons a day of food.

Yeah the only reason DRY food goes bad is if it gets wet, so as long as moisture doesnt get to it, it should be ok.

Very often foods get bugs in it, especially in the summer and freezing keeps the bugs from growing and multiplying. I always freeze all the critters dry foods in the summer. Winter no unless I have huge bags and know they won't eat it within a month or two.

Ah I c, well that makes some sense. Though I still wonder how it will get bugs in it if its stored in an airtight container the whole time. Unless they get in at the plant but then it seems like you would notice them when you open the bag.

I have a friend who has a vacume food sealer and she said she would vacume seal my food in bags so there was no air at all. I know that if I bought a big bag of cat food and had it sealed I could store the food for up to a year. And than I could if I wanted to put it in the freezer, but I would prefer not to. :)
