View Full Version : Live Crickets
How do you feed your hedgies live crickets? I bought a dozen a while ago but had trouble feeding them to my hedgie (not to mention storing them) since they were all over the place. I had no where to store them either except in the plastic bag that they're put in at the pet store. I prefer live bugs over freeze dried ones. Can hedgies catch them if left in their cage? I'm afraid that the bugs will jump out.

Haven't tried live crickets yet. The "yucky live food" aspect skeeves me out a bit. Some members have said they pull the back legs off before feeding. Some have suggested putting them in the freezer until they are sluggish but not dead.
The best cricket idea is from HedgieSpirit. Put your hedgie in the tub (no water) and let the crickets loose in there. Again, I have yet to try it but it just sounds so funny!

I put my hedgies in a rubbermaid with like 3 crickets. and everytime they get the crickets and I have yet to have a cricket escape. Plus any the first hedgie doesnt get then the next two definitly do.

I buy about 2 dozen at a time and put them in a small critter keeper with food and cricket quencher. If you buy several you will have to feed and provide moisture to them in order to keep them alive for more than a couple of days.
Otherwise, I just toss a cricket or two at a time in my hedgehog's condos (plastic tubs connected via pipes). Another fun method is to throw several crickets in the bathtub and put your hedgehog in.

I put my Hedgies in a seperate rubbermaid container or a small to medium critter cage and they really enjoy eating the crickets. I store my crickets in a rubbermaid container and I put potatoes, apples and other veggies inside for the crickets to eat I also put gut loader in. My hedgies love crickets!

:) Chloe LOVES to hunt crickets in the bathtub. I keep my crickets in a small rubbermade container (shoebox size) with small holes punched in the top. I feed and water them and leave pieces of egg carton in there for them to climb and hide under. They also make it easy to take out crickets w/o actually touching them  I find the crickets a little bit icky but watching Chloe chase them around and gobble them up is well worth it. She has so much fun :D

Gut load is cricket food. Feed the crickets than the Hedgie. Crickets are mostly protene. Gut load adds vit. and min.

The tub's a neat idea! I think I'll try that next time :)
I don't like touching the bugs. I actually use chopsticks to handle the mealworms.
