Well it finally happened. When I took Herbie out of his cage yesterday he had litter stuck to his sensitive areas. (pretty hate I think you warned me of this). I managed to get it unstuck  and gave him some mealies after that. We were using Swheat Scoop. I have gone through some of the past bedding threads and was just wondering if anybody could give me suggestions on what to use. Herbie isn't litter trained and I heard that they can get mites from shavings so I am not too excited about that. Please help us out cause i don't want my little guy to have to go through that again!

In my opinion Yesterdays News, Carefresh, or plain old paper towels are the best choices to be used in their litter box.
I am glad to hear you spotted the litter stuck in his private area and that you where able to remove it. :)

 Owie that sounds unpleasant.
My Suggestion:
Liners!! I love mine. I simply bought a vellux blanket and cut it up into the proper sizes. I know that Teasels Mom makes and sells liners as well. Liners are good because you don't risk ouchies like your hedgie just experienced or mite infestation. Some people don't like the odor but I personally haven't noticed a problem. As long as you have a paper towel or a litter pan under the wheel, you shouldn't have a problem. Liners are easy to clean too, just throw em into the washing machine. They are also more cost efficient in the long run :)

I'm no sure what Sweat Scoop is but it sounds like a type of Kitty Litter. Which doesn't surprise me if it is kitty litter that it got stuck. Mites are going to be a problem with any bedding you use unless you're using paper towels, yesterday's news or liners. If you're hedgie isn't potty trained none of those will work well.
Unless you litter train your hedgie I would go with aspen. There's a chance you'll get mites but it's much less with aspen then the other shavings.

Glad to hear you got it unstuck, and that you caught it before it caused any other problems :) Good job with keeping on top of things!

I've used both Carefresh and Cell-Sorb in my hedgie's litter box. Carefresh is too dusty so I've been using Cell-Sorb and I love it. Good luck. I believe Swheat Scoop is organic cat litter. I remember seeing the ad in an organic magazine.

Yeah swheat scoop is an organic cat litter made of wheat. It worked great, no odor, scoopable, etc. Except that now I have to check him all the time that it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the help! Keep the ideas comming! I like hearing other owners opinions :)

Lately Chloe hasn't been using her litter pan at all, she goes right in the middle of her liners. I don't think its too bad. Everynight before she gets up I pick up the poop, and change the liner.
I'm still voting for Yesterday's news in the pan, liners everywhere else :)

I use liners in the cage and then i place the wheel in a shallow box in the cage which has paper towel in it since there is plenty of room around the wheel he generall goes in the box. if you do this it is best to tape the box as a way of water proofing incase some pee soaks through the paper towel. thats my allergy friendly advice. if allergies arent an issue then you could use carefresh the only thing i dont like about it is how dusty it is you would think it would be hard on them to breathe that in!
