You guys I will be getting my new hedgies in a month, When I went to pay for them today at the breeders she told me that they had to stay on the diet she was feeding them for 2 mo. and that I had to buy a 6ilb. of the food she feeds them. I however, have had a hedgehog before and all I got from that breeder was a medium size ziplock baggie of food (which was free) and she told me to steadily wean them off the food over a 2 week period. My question is how long does it take to switch a diet??? I know it is a gradual process, we do it all the time at my job at the emergency clinic, however, I find it hard to fathom it takes 2 months. I need opinions here. Thanks!

Is the breeder's diet restriction part of the sale agreement? If it's not part of the sale contract, then I think you're free to change their diet however soon you'd like to.

I don't know too much about the diet issues here but it sounds to me like she is trying it on to sell you the food.

Did you buy your hedgehog from Vickie? If so she told me the same thing. Don't worry about it you can switch as soon as their stools return to normal. Just gradually mix in your food in with the old food. She made me buy a huge bag of her food too. She said it would last a month. I'm going to have the bad for like the whole year.
