I brought my hedgehog to the vet for the first time. (She seemed kind of small compared to her siblings) The vet checked her over and said she looked great but also said my baby could gain a little weight and still be healthy. She suggested adding kitten or a regular cat food for a little more fat for a couple weeks.

I found this cat food at work called Pinnacle by Breeder's Choice and was wondering about it:
Ingredients:
chicken meal, oats, ocean fish, oat bran, chicken fat, natural vitamin c and e, quinoa, grapeseed oil, phosphoric acid, whole dried egg, cottage cheese, cranberries and oyster shell.

The protien and fat percentages were what my vet suggested but I was wondering about the ingredients. My vet liked it for cats and said it helped with dry skin and made their hair shiny/

Just wondering,
Jessica

Hi Jessica,

I'm curious as to what the protein and fat percentages are that your vet recommends.

Personally, I'd try and find a food where the first ingredient is whole meat, not a "meal." Look for something like:

- Hill's Science Diet Feline Adult Chicken and Rice
- Wellness Super5Mix for Adult Cats
- Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul Adult Cat Formula
- Evolve Maintenance Formula for Cats
- C&P's Organix Feline Adult Formula
- Eukanuba Adult Chicken and Rice Formula for Cats
- etc.

I'd actually look at the "light's versions of the above, as I think that the regular versions are too high in fat; if you're trying to add some weight to your hedgie, don't do it by adding fats that can lead to other health problems.

To put a little weight on Marco, I added more CSFTCL Kitten formula to his diet. It worked.

Just a quick comment about meat "meal" vs whole meat.
IMO meal is the way to go.

For the meal, the meat has been cooked first, and then weighed- meaning that axp 66% of the water and fat has been cooked off. When you get just the plain meat, the meat is weighted and then cooked- so alot of the weight is in water, and not actual meat.

When you go with a meat meal, you are actually getting up to 5 times more meat in your food.

Back onto the topic of the actual food-

just by looking at the ingredients it seems like it is an alright food. The only thing that im not sure about is the oyster shell as an ingredient? Never heard of that before!
But over all, It look like an alright food :) No by-products, no BHA, BHT or ethoyquin, and it contains some nice wholeome ingredients like the eggs and cranberries :)

I believe oyster shell is also in chick feed, it has calcium carbonate in it. :slurp:
