I just thought I would share a little story with you guys. Jan. 2005, my 4 yr. old hedgie, named Hedwig died. I was devasted, he was my first hedgehog. He and my 10 year old dog, Roscoe, use to play in my room at nights. Roscoe would be lying on the floor and Hedwig would come sneak up beside him and nip the dogs exposed feet, Roscoe would then pop up like a jack-in-the-box, swiftly turn to locate the perpetraitor and growl at him. Hedwig would run away and Roscoe would follow him around the room, trying to watch him but at the same time avoiding getting his feet nipped at all cost. They did this every night. When Hedwig died I buried him in his fav blanket, with some of his snacks and toys, in a shoebox. Closed the lid with duck tape and then wrapped the box three times around with Saran Wrap to keep out the neighborhood cats. I dug a hole about a yard or more deep and placed Hedwig in it. All of my pets are buried in the back yard, and I placed Hedwig next to the Hamster who use to be his cagemate, whom had died 5 mo. earlier. Roscoe sat on the chain he has in the backyard, and watched me the whole time, just as he has watched me everytime I have burried a pet. The two days I spent heavily grieving over Hedwig, Roscoe laid close by my bedside, licking my face and sitting silently as I shed my tears. Yesterday evening my mother put Roscoe out on his chain as usual so that he could use the bathroom. When Roscoe is done with his duties he quickly barks and we go out to get him and bring him in the house. After a long period of time had passed my mother noticed that Roscoe had not barked to be let in, and told my Dad to go check on him. When my Dad went out to the backyard he saw Roscoe lying down in the grass with Hedwig's remains resting beside him. He had dug up my hedgehog, pulled it out of the blanket and box, and set his body beside him. When my dad went to take Roscoe off his chain he growled at my father. My mom had to come out with a leash and muzzle Roscoe, to take him inside. My dad reburied Hedgwig on the other side of the garage out of the reach of Roscoe's chain. When I got home from work that night my mother told me what happened. At first I could not believe my ears, Roscoe is not a digger. And out of all the pets we have out there he has never touched a one. My disbelief turned into a feeling of anger and betrayal. Before, I could yell at him and sentence him to a punishment my mom said these words, "I think he misses his friend". Then anger quickly melted away, and my heart was moved. At the end of this month I will be welcoming 2 new girls into the house, and I know Roscoe will be one of the first ones to want to meet them. Animals are so amazing.

What an awesome and sad storey. Poor Roscoe. :( I hope your new girls help fill a void in both his and your lives.

Wow! Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my first, six weeks ago and the pain is still fresh.

I now have two boys that were rescued who could never replace Frodo, but have already grabbed a piece of my heart.

I am sure Roscoe will enjoy hearing the pitter patter of hedgy toes soon. Take care.

That was a moving story. It was hard on both of you as you now see. Good luck with the new ones! :)

What a sweet story. It reminded me alot of a story about my dog, Roxy, and my old bunny, Bizkit.

Roxy and Bizkit were great friends. We got both of them around the same time, and they pretty much grew up together. I actually remember a point in time where Bizkit was bigger than Roxy :) Anyway- these two were wonderful friends, and would always play together when Bizkit was out. They would chase eachother around the yard in the summer, and when both of them got too tired, or hot, they would nap together under our trampoline.

Normally our family goes away in the summer on a trip that lasts about a month. During that time my Aunt's brother's family would usually take Roxy to look after. That particular summer, the person who normally looked after my bunny was unable to- so he went to stay at "Uncle" Steve's place- with Roxy. I thought it would be great for them to beable to be together :)

Unfortunently, while there, Bizkit escaped from the hutch he was kept in outdoors :( He managed to get out 1 day before my parents arrived home to pick him up.

Fast Forward a Few Months

I had just started working at a new job at a pet store. My boss was pretty cool and would allow me to sometimes bring Roxy into work with me for the day.
At work, we had these two big brown bunnies- that looked EXACTLY like my Bizkit, except they didnt have floppy ears. The first day that I brought Roxy in to work with me- she sat by those two bunnies all day, whinning, and pacing back and forth. It was horribly sad- especially since she totally ignored all the other rabbits there.

I guess Im not the only one who misses by bunny...
