How many generations would you require from a seller's pedigree to buy a chin? There is another post for if you are selling chins, as people often give different answers.

Generally I would like to have at least 2 generations, but preferably more if possible. I think that if you don't at least know the grandparents and parents, then it's a little too much unknown history. Aislynn (who passed away last month) had a 4 generation pedigree. My current girl has a 2 or 3 generation pedigree (can't rememeber at the moment). The more generations the better, but just because a breeder doesn't have any more info than parents and grandparents doesn't mean I will pass up a really great Chin.

I usually like three gen pedigrees because you can see what other colors have been bred into the line. 2 gens are alright and i've bought them before, just would rather have a 3 if possible. - Jessica

I'm not picky about my pedigrees, as I'm looking more for the furry balls of love as pets than for breeding.

Now if I were breeding, I'd hope for an in-depth pedigree so that I knew what I was introducing to my breeding lines.

2 is fine but more is better. I guess it's more of what other questions I can have answered about the chin, ezpecialy female, that make up my mind.

the more the better BUT it truly depends on who the chin comes from. some breeders have - or do - falsefy pedigrees and i have bought chins from a breeder who just doesn't 'do' pedigrees. he tells you what colors/traits the parents had and that is it. i ALWAYS out cross his chins and i know many breeders who say that he is the only person they would get a chin from without a pedigree and put it into breeding.

The least amount I need to know is the parents. I'm not worried about inbreeding at the moment as I only have one male and four females and none of them are related. The breeder I get most of my chins from is also very reputable and I trust her completely.

I feel the same way as Cherubchins. I have one person I have bought all my chins from, nd I trust her completely. I ahve never had any problems and her chins are health and NOT inbreed. If you can trust someone, and yet there are people who falsify pedigrees, what is the point if the info is not true. Trust and a real realationship with your breeder is most important to me.

i MUST know what the parents were. Other than that, im not picky. Most ranches only keep 1 gen anyways. The ranch i have gotten some of mine from just hand me the card from the front of the cage with the critter.

To buy the chin I need no pedigree as I buy them for what I see in them not what it says on paper. But if a pedigree is available I want it as far back as possible so I can track the performance of a line and for when and if I try to reproduce what that line has given me.
