As you may know I got my hedgie (herby) 4 days ago. And it's been great! At first when I'd pick him up he'd have a fit (I thought he was just scared) And I've worked with him a lot. But when I pick him up and stuff he still huffs and puffs. I was wondering if you guys had anything I could do to get him to not be so scared. I know it will take time to bond and stuff, it's just I really don't know anyways to get him to get used to me besides holding him. So how did you guys get your hedgies used to you?

You can put a piece of clothing in his cage (no lose stings) so he can get used to you scent. Also, offer him little treats when you have him out and keep talking to him. It takes a lot of patients but it sounds like you have that! :)

Put him in a hedgebag so he is secure and set him on your lap while you watch tv or cruise the forums. He'll get used to your scent. Plus with him in a hedgebag, the huffing and puffing won't poke you as much. It takes patience. It took me 6 months to bring my very first hedgie around and I have another cranky resident hufflebutt who will only come out and explore under the covers. He doesn't want me to see him  and he's going on 7 months old

I've had Popples for 5 months now and he still huff and hiss when i go and pick him up.... but i have notice that lately if he is still sleeping and i talk to him softly and after he comes out on his own he is not as huffy.

I put a tshirt in Pringle's cage for a few days when I first got him. They say when they eat out of your hand they trust you.

I dn't find that the huffing & puffing is so that they are scared, more or less that they don't want to be bothered. Taria still huffs and puffs, and she is 6 mths. She only does it for like 10 seconds now though.
