Hello. I have a one year old albino female that had previously been in wonderful health. I started seeing an almost flaky edging to her ears. The rest of her skin is in wonderful shape and she doesn't seem to be bothered by the state of her ears. After realizing it wasn't getting better, I took her to the vet. This was two weeks ago. The vet visually inspected both of her ears and did a scraping of as well.
She didn't really like the vet poking around her head (who can blame her) so it wasn't the best, but at least he had something to look at under the microscope. Now, he told me she does not have mites. His suggestion for the shape of her ears was that it might have been either just really dry skin or it could be diet related. I was feeding her Iams with mealworms. Since, I've started feeding her Royal Canin 37 (1/2), Purina One-Healthy Wt. Mgmt (1/4) and Iams (1/4) with mealworms and some fruits. If it didn't get better, I was supposed to come back. Well, it still looks pretty much the same. Does anyone have advice?

It is probably just dry ears. They can get really ragged looking. You can use vasaline on the edges of them but what I found works best is human Nipple Cream. It is the stuff that nursing moms use. I like it because it is unscented and non-toxic. Rub a bit on the edges of her ears every night and within a week you will see improvement.

You can also use Bag Balm which is what the farmers use on cows udders. :)

If you cant find the Bag Balm (I couldnt seem to find it at Walmart...) you could use this other udder cream called Udderly Smooth (which I did find at Walmart).

Bag balm would be at a co-op or farm supply place. Some petstores sell it also.

Many thanks to both of you for the advice. Magil and I will definitely try that out. Whew...that's me, breathing a sigh of relief.
