Just one question, if there are no differences between male and female hedgies personality wise, why are females more expensive? I have heard that they are more expensive because the are needed more for breeding then males and are born less than males in the summer time, is this why? I have also heard that there an increased risk of reproductive problems, such as uterine cancer and pyometria, and is suggested bringing your female to the vet for regular check-ups and to be prepared for the expense of reproductive problems. Is this true? If so, why are females more expensive than males?

It is mostly because there are more males born than females. Also people want females to breed and for some reason many people are under the misguided notion that females make a better pet.

I think the reason they are different entirely depends on the breeder you talk to. I know some breeders state that they get more males than they do females out of a litter. Others have more demand for females than males and charge a lower fee for a male to help 'push' them. Yet there are other breeders out there who charge the same price for their animals no matter what sex or color they are.
But I suspect that between the reasons I give above, and the ones you list, are probably a good start at why.

I had similar questions myself especially when the breeders make a point of stating their hedgies are for pets only and not for breeding. Then why the higher price?

Probably because one breeder started charging less for males then females because they had more males then females. Then all the other breeders followed suit regardless of whether they had more females or males.
Generally in any pet, maybe except horses, females are more pricey than males.
Just a thought.
I plan on charging depending on color and quality rather the gender.

Since this is from my website, I will respond. I charge more for females because I get less females in the litters than males. I don't see any difference between the temperaments of males and females. Some people have a preference to one sex or the other.
Females do have more health problems with uterine cancer, pyometria, problems with pregnancy and delivery. I have lost a couple of females as breeders after 1st and 2nd litters, due to difficult pregnancies.
I also try to keep my prices comparative to other breeders near me. I don't try to compete with them. I actually refer people to the other breeders, since we are in different states.
Regarding the higher price on albinos and pintos....Only one pinto has been born here and if I ever have an albino born here, it will stay here.
But if you don't like my prices, you can go to the petstore and pay $75. And people do that in my town.

Please do not be offended, I hope you didn't think I was saying I don't like your prices, I was just wondering why it was more for females. Now that I know, I think that charging more for females make alot of sense, and I know that if I were you, my prices would be the same as yours. It's like a jewel, the more rare they are, the more expensive, which makes sense.

No, I was not offended! Just stating a fact that some people think I charge too much. There is a petstore in town that sells hedgies.
Since Nov. I have lost about 20 babies, including an emergency c-section and spay. You definitely DON'T make money breeding hedgehogs.

I understand the prices, I just paid 200 for my girls, but I can understand why, they have some great high white color to them. If I wanted something cheaper I could have easily gotten a standard male for 100 or less. I think it is about what your looking for in regard to sex and color. For me, color was important -- so I was willing to pay the price.
