I went to a pet store last week and the had a petting zoo going on. They had hedgies there so I picked him up. She was real good and didn't hiss or ball up (i guess there not supposed to in a petting zoo!) but as soon as i sat down with her (with a cloth uderneath) she started to poop nonstop. She did that for the whole 10-15 min. i was holding her. I know that baby hedgies will do that on you, but this was at least a year old hedgie. Is this ok for her? Is she just not trained not to do that? Or is there something wrong with her? There was also another female in the cage with her I asked to see but they said she was a mean hedgie and they never picked her up. I felt so sorry for her, because she was never played with, and had no toys or blankies, only a pigloo and food/water. I would buy her and help her out, but she's not for sale because she's for the petting zoo. Other than every Saturday and Sunday-1:00pm-4:00pm, they hedgies are left completely alone. I know this is probably how all pet stores keep there hedgies, but it is sad, and now they don't even use her for the petting zoo anymore but they won't sell her to a better place. I just think that if they aren't going to do anything with her, and that she could go somewhere were she would get a good home, that they would sell her.

I doubt that anything is wrong with the hedgie because of the poop issues. Some adults just poop more than others while some have good control. My kids will poop on me if I pick them up while they are sleeping. That's just what they do.
As far as the "mean" one, she is probably not socialized. Some hedgies just don't warm up for you. That's the stores decision on whether they sell her or not. Unsocialized hedgies are a lot of work and it takes a special and patient person to take them in.

It sounds like a sad situation. I feel sorry for all animals in pet stores.

if you buy a hedgie from a pet store expect to be spending a lot of time to socialize it with you, just because its "nice" at the store doesnt mean it will be that way when you get it home

I brought a 3 month old hedgie home from a petstore. It took a week and she'd warmed up to me. She knows her name (strangely enough), and waddles toward me when I call her. I can't even keep her in a ball, and she doesn't mind me blowing in her face. I tried that to discourage the nipping, but she thought it was a game and sneezed back at me. I think it depends on the hedgie, really. Because Hemi is definately a prime pick from a petstore. She's so good.
