My hedgie, Zeek, runs A LOT in his wheel. We rigged it up with an odometer in mid October, and just a few days ago, he passed the 1,000 mile mark!
He did not run as much at first, maybe 2.5 miles a night. Now he runs up to, maybe 17 per night! All night its "running-running-running-stop!-sniff-running-running-eat-running..."
We think he thinks he is going places. At the beginning of the night he runs one way, then around 2 or 3 am, he turns around and goes the other way!
So how far do your pigs run?

My little boy (also a Zeek) runs like mad! (Must go with the name!) How'd you hook up the odometer? I'd love to find out how far he thinks he's going!

That would be interesting to find out. I know that if I have a lot of poopy wheels, the crew was booking, and if it's relatively clean that they took it easy that night. My little ones run all night- they love their wheels :)

I have no idea how far they run but I can say they are definately obsessed with their wheels. When Milkshake and Fizzy were in the same cage they fought over the wheel all the time. They're much happier now in seperate cages as they each have a wheel that's all their own. :|

17 miles a night is quite something. If only i had half their energy.

Miss Marple and Nigel love to run. In fact Nigel loves his wheel so much that me's managed to get his food dish next to his wheel so he doesn't even have to leave it at night when he wants a snack while running.

I got two pics of Zeek's wheel here.
Wheel/Odometer Setup (http://laurifer3d.com/Images/odo_set_up.JPG)
We went to a sports store and baught a cheep bike odometer. Since the two holes that are already in the wheel (I have no idea why) are too big, we used a drill to make a slightly smaller one. The little magnet is screwed into that. Then we put the receiver around the wheel post. The wire then leads up and out of his condo. He has never bothered the wires so it works great!
Odometer Closeup (http://laurifer3d.com/Images/odo_close_up.JPG)
That is a closeup of the odometer part showing the total ammount he has run (1083.9 miles). It also shows the time, current speed, and trip distance (which I clear every night). The one thing I wish it had was his max speed. He looks like he is going really fast, but its hard to tell.

Well I guess tomorrows project will be digging the bikes out of the shed and taking the spedometers off them to attach to the hedgie wheels.

Well, I did it! I went out and spent the $30 it cost to buy the cheapest bike odometer I could find! It was well worth it though cause last night my little Zeek ran 11.32 miles!:applause: :applause: :applause: I've made up a little chart so I can track how far he runs each day as well as his total distance. The odometer I purchased can also tell me what his average and maximum speed were (2.5 mph and 3.1 mph). This is so cool! I was thinking...If a few more people wanted to get their hogs set up with odometers, I would love to start a Hedgie Running Club. We could have certificates for certain mile markers (100, 500, 1000 etc.), as well as prizes for the first hog to hit those marks. Just an idea!
