Hello everyone. I'm new here and I have something to ask about my hedgie's health. Firstly I'd like to thank Janine for helping me out while I was pending permission to post on this forum.
Anyway back to my emergency.

My hedgie isn't well. He had the green slimey poop for about a week now. And I thought that was my only cause for concern when I booked him a visit to the vet today. But this morning, it was worse then I thought. He was all pale turning bluish and it looked as though he had shrunk overnight! He was weak. And he had a dark blackish crust on his head which began to bleed! And then I found another on his front leg!!!! His skin was starting to get white spotish flakes too and his quills would come off. At first I thought it was just quilling....

I just came back from the vet. She wasn't familiar with hedgehogs..her assistant was so amused by a hedgie it didn't occur to her that forcefully patting and grabbing my hedgie wasn't welcomed! It's sick for goodness sake!

So the vet says she'll do her best. She didn't do a fecal test because I guess my hedgie didn't pass any since yesterday. And I really didn't want to wait before my little one got some medicine help. But she looked at him and said it's parasites. And the blue discolouration was the effect of it, sort of like an allery that was causing him to have bad blood circulation and that the crust was heamorrage ( not sure if I spelt it right but the blood clot problem). She gave him iodine for the wound. Antibiotics - cotrin and an anti-hestimine. Told me to feed him honey or glucose water if he wasn't eating. And gave me a bottle of vitamin/iron liquid. I suppose the drugs are drowzy ones cause my little one's all groggy and weakish and fallen asleep.

So I guess my question is has anyone had roughly similiar problems? Maybe the green poo or parasite? If so how was it treated? I guess I really just want someone to tell me he's going to be okay now. That the antibiotics will help and he'll be up and running, huffing and puffing again in no time.

thanks! :banghead:

Cotrin? I've never heard of that for an antibiotic. It's hard to explain the green poos without the aid of a fecal flotation and I'm a little nervous that your vet "diagnosed parasites" without one. How long have you had your hedgie? It could be stress related from a change in environment and diet. It could also be bacterial too. I've treated hedgies for giardia, clostridium and I'm currently treating one for campylobacter, but again these were diagnosed.
Antibiotics can supress appetite, so I would plan on syringe feeding your little guy. I use canned A/D (available from vet) chicken baby food or canned cat food (Wellness usually) I add a little water and heat it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Make sure it is not too warm. You can also sryinge your hedgie water or honey water. I have a bowl of regular water and pedialyte in for Tico. He also gets syringe fed several times a day. Make sure your hedgie stays warm too. You may have to add a heating pad
