A quick home test (not necessarily the most accurate) is to take a dark piece of cloth, add hedgie, rub gently. If you can see white specs moving on the cloth, they are mites. Not all mites are white though. If you see no white specs, your hedgie may still have mites. The best way to find out is to go to the vet. They will most likely do a skin scraping. Hope this helps :)

In my case, the hedgies had a lot of dark mites.

I kept them on light-colored vellux, which made them easy find

Yea, Chloe had white mites when I got her. I discovered them when I picked her up off of our dark green couch :Pukey:

Hedgiemommie, don't feel stupid, it wasn't a dumb question at all. We are all here to help anyway :) I'm glad to hear you are getting the mite situation checked out by a vet :)

Doris is just getting over some mites and to me it looked like dry flaky skin. I never did the black shirt test 'cause I never thought it was mites. The vet saw them under the microscope.

Me too, good luck! If it turns out that hedgie does have mites, try to get Revolution, not invermectin (sp?).
