I lost my newest little angel today. Paisley, a black velvet that I only got last night.

When we got up this morning she was fine. I held her and cuddled her and she was doing great. About 11:30 my son told me she was bleeding, and when I went to look at her, her rectum had inverted and was sticking out along with part of her intestine. I was scared to death, so we took her to a 24 hour vet hospital here in Oklahoma City, and they got her in ASAP.

The doctors did everything they could for her, but she kept pushing her rectum back out, and they put a purse-string suture on her to hold it in, but because she's so small it wouldn't hold. The doctor finally told me that if it kept coming back out, she would more than likely end up chewing it off, and that would kill her very painfully. I didn't want to watch her suffer, so they told me the only humane thing to do would be to put her to sleep.

I have been crying for 7 hours over this little angel. I know she doesn't hurt anymore, but it's the first one I've lost. They gave me a nice certificate with her footprints on it to remember her by, and buried her for me, but it hurts so bad. She was only 2 months old. She was so precious.

I pray that God takes care of her and that she's happy now.

I am so sorry! I am sure she is in a better place free of pain and eating all the raisons she can eat. Lots of chinny hugs and kisses to you!

Sorry about your loss. It's so amazing how these little bundles of fur get into to our hearts so fast.

I'm so sorry. We lost a little one the same way last fall. I'm chocked up now just thinking of it. You did the right thing. I realize that just doesn't help. you're in our thoughts & prayers.

Is this really as common as the vet says it is in small animals? I spoke with the breeder who gave her to me, and she said she's never seen it before in any of hers. I've been thinking it was all my fault, because I changed her diet too quickly, but the vet said that probably wasn't it.

Angela even though the breeder has not had this problem in his/her herd before does not mean that the chin was not ill when you purchased her. I am not saying that the breeder knew that the chin was ill they most likely did not know. It is my understanding that something like this needs a few days to manifest itself. I believe your vet is correct and you did not contribute to her problem. Stress may have contributed to the problem but do not feel it caused that problem. If the breeder is unwilling to compensate you for your loss I recommend doing some research on rectal prolapse and then contacting the breeder again. I am sorry you had to go through this I do not feel there was anything anyone could have done to prevent this from happening.

The breeder is actually a friend of mine, and Paisley was a gift to me for redesigning her website for her. All 3 of my chins were gifts from her, and she even paid for the vet hospital since she knew I couldn't afford it. She's a good, Christian woman, and would never have given her to me if she had known, so I don't blame her at all, and maybe one day in the near future I will be able to get another little one.

I will take your advice and will do some research on rectal prolapse. If it has happened to my own chin, I'm sure there are others out there who may be just as scared going through it with theirs, and maybe if I can post some info about it on our website it will help to comfort someone else.

I would think your friend the breeder should be doing some research as well. What if it is contagious? I found some information on listeriosis that would be of concern. The rest seems to be about diarrhea and constipation as a cause, but also as an effect of something else (like GI issues).

Apparently I have nothing better to do with my time than search on 'chinchilla rectum'. I'm sure that will go into my FBI file or something.

Rectal prolapse is something that seems to affect very young chins most often. It sounds like your friend is a very nice person. I did not mean to imply that she was not.
