I'm planning ahead. Our chin will be going on vacation with us this summer. Our cage is large and from what I can tell it doesn't look like it would break down easily(we dont have it yet, its on order). Does anyone have suggestions for travelling with your chins and for inexpensive solutions for travel cages ? We'll be a week at the seashore in a house so we have room but there are kids and the car is usually pretty packed. I have a cat carrier to get him down there but it won't be big enough for the whole week.

I don't want to leave him home, I don't know that I'd trust anyone to care for him and I know that our house gets hot when it's closed up. The cats stay home, someone checks them a few times during the week and they retreat to the basement if they're hot but the chin wouldn't have that option. I wouldn't want him down there for the week either, there's not enough light. He's really going to have to come with us.

wow, good luck w/ that one. They don't travel well. & you'd have to take a larger cage w/ you. You're best bet would be to find someone to babysit for you. Maybe in their house? Best wishes.

Where do you live? Maybe there would be somebody on CnQ that could chin-sit for you. Also contact the vets in your area. They may know of somebody who has chins that might be willing to chin-sit. Good Luck

If you're handy with wire here's a link back to a post i made about some maternity cages that collapse flat.

The price of wire went up around here so the cost would be closer to $20 for materials.

Maybe that will give you an idea.
The tub comes in handy for storing all the extras like the water bottles, bowls, food, etc. while traveling.

One week in the basement might be better than the stress of moving him to a whole new home.

"One week in the basement might be better than the stress of moving him to a whole new home."

...unless she has no A/C in her basement and it gets above 80 degrees.

Good luck finding a cage. Quality Cage sells Stow-n-Go Portable Ferret Home that might be a good travel cage once you get to your vacation residence.
