Well, I used to have this cat... I found her at the pound when I was just going to visit the animals. (How many people spend time with the 'almost unadoptable' or sick animals at the pound? Not many.. so I go to visit with them.)

Anyway.. there was this cat there. She was white, had no ears, and had pneumonia. I asked if they were going to treat her illness before adopting her out, or was she already adoptable. They replied with, "She has two days to get better. Then we're going to put her down. No one wants a cat with no ears." Sad, I know. No cat can get rid of pneumonia without meds in two days! So I put down my $5 and took her home. (Best $5 I've ever spent.) She recovered from her illness just fine.

She had no ears, because she was a sun-bather. She would follow the sun patches as they danced across the floor. I suspect that her sunburned ears got so bad, that her owners finally took her in and got them removed. But based on her personality... and how she wandered the streets for must have been a LONG time.. I don't think they cared about her. She was shy of hands... and would run if you made any sudden movements. I wouldn't be surprised if she was abused. :(

She had a nice life with me. Sun bathing every day. Naps on the couch. And playtime with my other cat, Oryan.

But one day, we noticed lesions on her nose. Then they spread to her eyes. Her nose and eyes would literally bleed. She developed three lumps on top of her head... grew lethargic, and sneezed a lot. We took her to the vet. It seems her skin cancer had come back, and spread. On her skin on her head, to her nose, and her eyes. We suspect it was in her jaw, too, because she lost interest in chewing/eating any kind of dry cat food. We attempted some medicine treatment, but it wasn't working. She stopped eating for two weeks, and wouldn't move from the same spot all day. She would cry as if she were in pain.

We took her in to put her down on April 14th. She was in my arms when she passed on.

I know it's one thing to put an animal in pain down. We know they don't suffer and don't feel any more pain afterwards... but when you're holding your cat when she dies.. it really hits you. :(

I miss her. I'll always miss her.

Love you, Kassy.

Kassy, loving those sun patches on the floor:

Hi,

What a wonderful story and what you did for Kassy. She was such a pretty girl! She was lucky that you found her that day. She looks so happy laying there in the sun.

Your story makes me so sad. I wish I could help the animals as well. Take care and I am very sorry for your loss of your sweet Kassy.

Take Care,
Chilly

Just thinking about her still makes me cry.

Ears or not... I think she was gorgeous! (Most people would say 'No ears?! She looks like a big white ferret!".. and so I gave her a photo shoot in the sun patches just to show ya... a no-earred white kitty can look normal, too. You can barely notice in the pic she is ear-deficient.) :)

I still think she's wonderful. Even my 'not a cat person' hubby misses her. :)
