When you advertise your kits for sale? When do you accept deposits? When do you accept full payment?
I dont understand why people put newborn kits in the classifieds. If a chin is only a day old, and you are accepting deposits-- I find it a bit weird. At a day old, or even a week or 2 weeks old you have no clue if that animal is going to survive!
I personally haven't posted an animal forsale until they were weaned, and I knew they were healthy. I would never dream about putting a day old kit up for sale.
With my next litter I do have several people intersted in the kits that will be born- but I will NOT accept a deposit on them until they are well older than 2 weeks.
All my kits are welcome here before, and after they are sold. I have NO problem waiting an extra couple of weeks, months(whatever), because I choose to list them at 8 weeks when they were weaned, then 1 day old.
How do YOU feel about accepting deposits/full payment on kits that ar eonly a few days old? What about kits that are a few weeks old?

I personally do not accept deposits/payments until the kit is weaned. I will put names on a list for a particular kit in the order in which I'm contacted about them & ask for the payment/deposit when weaning occurs, but I won't take money from anyone until I know the kit is weaned, healthy and ready to go to a new home. Basically...no money until the chin can actually leave.

Well this is tough for me as I do sometimes post newborns as eventually being for sale as I know out of some pairs that I just cannot keep anymore kits, but once someone is interested I let them know I do not accept any deposit til they are at least a month old and that they do not leave here nor will the deposit be cashed until the animal is weaned. Mopstly for this year unless it is just a kit I cannot keep at all I am trying to just hang onto ALL my kits til show time. Then I will decide which ones I keep and which ones I sell.

Usually I won't except a deposit on a kit until it is 4 weeks old or older and this is usually from someone that has been waiting for a baby. Every buyer is told that, god forbid, something happened to the kit between the deposit and the kit going home, of course they would be entitled to a refund.
I would NEVER post an ad for newborns. You just never know if you will lose one during the critical first couple of weeks.

I geuss I should have stated that I post the babies in the breeding and babies section as potentially for sale not in the for sale section until I know they are doing well and are over the critical time, but I consider anything under a month old to be newborn.

Normally, I don't post kits for sale until they are at least a few weeks old.
I'm still working on my deposit "policy". I didn't used to require a deposit, but I've had a few people disappear/change their mind on me after holding a kit for them. In the future, I think I'm only going to allow a deposit/payment after five weeks, but I have taken a deposit and full payment before a kit is weaned. (The full payment wasn't my idea, they just sent it.) I deposit checks in the bank just so I know they will go through, but the money stays in the bank just in case something happens and I need to refund.

I think it depends on the kits. If they are healthy and strong and doing well then I think 2 weeks at the earliest is o.k. as long as the deposit is refunded if something does happen. The breeder has to use good judgement in determining the right time.
I have put a deposit on a kit that was 2 weeks old at the time. I was purchasing her from a great breeder though. I wouldnt be doing that with someone I didnt fully trust.

I would have to say I agree with Alison. Although I see everyones points..I have had people back out...change their mind...about not only chins..but my hedgies..I used to hold them till weaned for people...and others would want to buy that one..and the orginal person back out...So I take deposits at 4 weeks to hold until weaned. And yes...I keep it..just incase something were to happen..they would get refund. But I have deposits..to ensure they want it.

My new policy is that I do not accept deposits at all on any of my kits. Reason why is because I don't want to mess with having to keep a deposit if someone backs out and if someone tells me they want a particular kit then I will hold the kit until I recieve full payment and if I do not recieve full payment by the time the kit weans and is ready to go to his or her new home and then the person backs out then it wasn't meant to be anyways and I wouldn't want someone getting a kit that does not want him or her so I sell to the next person that I approve of. Also another new policy I have is I do not sell most of my kits from certain pairs until they are 6mos old so I can see how they are turning out. I can also reserve the right to change my mind to sell to a particular person if I find out later they are not a fit home for my chins.
When I sell adults I expect full payment within 5 days unless otherwise stated different. Adults are ready to go to their new homes and I am not a holding facility here.
