What would you do if you had to evacuate because a hurricane was coming? Would you take your Animals, your most precious Items, Just Important things, Or All?
I'm asking because When I had to leave my home for Hurricane Ivan, I had to chose between my Animals, My Precious Items and Important stuff. I only had 24 hours to figure out What I was taking and what I was going to leave behind. I had to leave my Birds and my Hamster. I could only take my 2 hedgehogs and it broke my heart I couldn't take everything. :( This time I have 3 hedgehogs and I'm trying to figure out How I will take them all with me. I can't put them all in one cage because one of the is a male and the others are females.
How do you get ready for something like this? I know some of you have more then 5 hedgehogs. Do you take them all? Will you take them all?
Thanks for your time.
Allie :)

For taking all hogs you can always make up a cage that has three separate unites for then, that's just an idea. I don't have to worrie about hurricane's in live in Ontario Canada. But that was the first thing that pop in my head after reading your post.

That is a good Idea. But I'm not sure How I'd do it. The new rescue I got is kinda a meany. I only walk past her cage and she gets mad. I am afraid if I put her next to one of my others she might try and bit them if they get to close. I try holding her and everything. She is a little nice after a little handling but she is very stubborn. And very messy!

I just read somewhere that there will be about 13 Number of named storms expected this year in the Atlantic - 7 Number of those storms expected to reach hurricane strength - 3 Number of intense hurricanes expected.

If you got just one large sterilite, and made partitions (maybe out of thick cardboard and taped to the sides) and put all the supplies you would need for them in the container (bottled water, dry food in an airtight container, paper towels, a fleece blanket or two). Just store it in a closet somewhere and make sure to restock the food if it goes bad. It might seem like there isn't much room for them, but I'm sure they prefer that to trying to live through a hurricane.

My boyfriend and I have discussed what we would do should there be a fire or natural disaster that would threaten our home. Animals and his portable hard drive are the important things. After that, we take what we can carry.

Hi,
I dont own any hedgies but we do own chinchillas, a dog and cats. When the hurricanes came last year we evacuated for one of them. We loaded up all the chinchillas in carriers (1 carrier can hold either 2, 4, or 10 chinchillas 1 per compartment we have a lot of these due to the amount of chins we own). We also put all our important paper work in a fire proof safe and everything else was left behind. Plan a head and being prepaired is key. We live in Florida and have heard that this year is suppose to be bad but hey the weather men cant even predict tomorrows weather much less the future.
I believe Demars has a line of carriers with multiple compartments as well as bass equipment company. I hope this helps.

Lindsay1980 And yourmine, Those are good Ideas. I thought of maybe getting the cube shelves that some people have and making 3 cubes and putting Tile down and around so they can't see or touch each other. Or just getting a few small pet taxi's or the smallest tote (Not to small) and just put them in that until we get to a place and set up their reg cages. I dunno I'm still plaining. I want to be ready this time! The season is almost here.... So far I have all my important things in a large tote and toys, Blankets, extra food dishes and Extra water bottles in another tote. That is all under my bed until it is time. I'm gonna keep thinking and plaining this out. Thanks for your Ideas though.

Hedgie Hugs and best wishes, Zoey, Honey, Nuka, and Allie. :)

Hope everyone is safe this Hurricane season!!!!

Normally when hurricanes come through that are especially bad I go more inland to my Grandparents or my Aunt's and the hedgies come with.

Luckily the part of Florida I live in is mostly sheltered from hurricanes. Normally the worst thing that happens is trees get knocked down and our power goes out.

If I lived in a more hurricane prone place I would keep things on hand to make a quick escape.

I live in Orlando and we stay home. We own exotics plus 2 horses. When I say exotics I mean wildlife. :) We bring everyone in and wait! When I shipped in breeding hedgehogs the breeder I bought from used a regular carrier and took a priority mailing box flattened and cut it to size and put it between the top and bottom of the carrier then connected the carrier. The females went on one half the males on the other. Now with all of our breeders we will probably do this in multiple cages. The down side for us is the fact that we have cars and can only fit so much in them. We also have a 120 pound shepherd so what I plan to do is stick some sterilites inside one another and then our gym bags in them in the trunk the dog usually lays on the entire back seat and then the carriers ride one on top of the other on the floor. The skunks and raccoons will have to get squished into small carriers and deal. We have a rover pen for the skunks that lays flat and goes in the trunk too. A rover pen is like an exercise pen made with pvc pipes that is pretty lightweight. Important papers come and that's it. Not even my wedding pictures came last time. :( I did not care. My animals were more important.
