So, after a thread in classifieds, I decided to pose this question..

Is it really that bad?

If you are one of the ones who thinks it is so horrible, have you bred two TOV's or two Whites together? Have you had a bad experience?

I will state my only personal experience- I have a black here who has a grandfather out of 2 blacks. He is healthy, and last I heard his grandfather was still in breeding, at 11+ years old...

Well, I have a chin here who is out of a black mom and a TOV/eb dad and she seems to be just fine - not mummified at all. :)

Although I have no chins that came from this type of breeding, I know that certain large ranchers have stated to me, one on one, that it is not something that they worry about when it comes time to put 2 chins that compliment one another into breeding.

Isnt there only a 25% chance of having a lethal kit? I am curious to know if anyone does this and doesnt have any probs. Not that I plan on doing it, but Ive heard of this in horses as well, and was always curious about it. Seems weird to me that a color could influence that much.

I think I have one whose grandparents or great grandparents were both tov or tov to Black velvet (I'ld have to double check the pedigree).
Anyways, my understanding is there are no problems health wise to the kits from the breedings, just possibly to the mother; or the quality of the kits not being so great. Or that the kits could possibly be sterile.

Isnt there a difference between blacks and ebonies? I thought they were one and the same and someone told me I was wrong. I was told that a black and an ebony are two different things by at least 2 people. EB or black is not a lethal gene, just TOV and white, from what I understand. So two ebs would be fine, just not 2 black velvets.

The more serious breeders sometimes call Black Velvets, "Blacks". Ebonies are always only ebs. You can have a TOV of any color really, if you have a Black Velvet aka Black as one of the ancestors of that chin. Make sense?

I've not heard of the kits being sterile before? I have been told that breeding white to white is generally not a great idea simply because whites don't always have the best fur to begin with. So if you breed a not great fur to a not great fur you get........not great fur.

I do know of breeders who breed TOV to TOV, and in fact, one of them just might surprise you. But they have never mentioned mummified babies, sterile babies, or any of the other things I've read about on the different forums. Obviously these larger breeders are concerned with production as they are pelters, and yet they cross TOV to TOV.

Black Velvets are called "Blacks" by many people.

Ebonies and Blacks are two very different things. Blacks and Black Velvets are the same thing..
