so I've been doing a lot of research and am taking in a one year old apricot hedgehog named Hamlet within the next week or so :) . I've got almost everything I need and now it is down to the bedding decision.
:dunno: I think I might be allergic to some of the beddings out there and I'm also nervous about mites AND I am sort of on a budget. I really really REALLY want to go in the vellux direction, but he is not exactly litter trained.
do you think i could do a vellux and paper towel mix for a while?
do you know of any good beddings that most people don't have reactions to?

if you make a few liners you can rotate them as needed...also you can try to litter train them. It's easy with some and impossible with others. But if they do get litter trained it's a lot easier to clean out the cage. Also if you want to go in the direction of bedding use a kiln dried pine...unless you are allergic to it.

I bought some thick fleece at Walmart for $2 a yard and it works great as liners. Under the fleece I put cut-to-fit pieces of waterproof matress pad, also from Walmart. They are flannel on one side and vinyl on the other. I change the fleece and pad when they get stained and put in a new set while the dirties are being laundered.
I put a litter pan (a foil baking dish with Kaytee Soft-sorbent) under the wheel.
The cage and liners stay very clean. The wheel gets most of the mess and the litter pan gets the rest.
The wheel, of course, gets washed every day but I just pick the poops out of the litter and a little goes a long way. I probably change it twice a week and a small bag has lasted about a month and a half.
This has worked out very well for us.
