I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but is heavy breathing a sign of labor in hedgehogs? My girl is up, just sitting still, and breathing heavily. So much, that I can actually hear her breathing. Any input?

Yes, definately a sign of labor. Matter of fact, if she hasn't already accomplished something by now, I would say it is a sign of her having troubles. If she doesn't have babies already, and is still doing this, then call your vet ASAP.

There is no such thing as a "silly question" when your hedgie is expecting. I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions though. I know next to nothing about expecting moms or babies.
Please keep us advised on this situation.
Thank you
Billy

I had to leave for a class immediately after posting this message. When I returned, she was sound asleep, with a nice big stool next to her nest. Perhaps she had trouble with getting the stool out? Seems a bit far-fetched though. Maybe it was my imagination at work? I checked her out and she seems fine. Active and eating well. The vet advised me to just keep a close eye on her for now. This whole pregnancy thing really makes you paranoid. :|

That's perfectly understandable...just keep an eye on her and good luck!!! Is this your first litter?
