Razzle seems to always be swallowing or licking his nose and making a sound like....I don't know how else to describe this noise except "smacking his lips". :neener: He does this alot - and he's not eating or drinking when he's doing it. Do all hedgies do this? At his vet check, there was nothing weird about his throat or anything. Just wondered if anyone else noticed this noise with their hedgies?

It's sounds perfectly normal. My Sweetie Pie is always making this sort of chirping noise when she's playing in her tube or when she's being cuddled after a bath. I think I've also heard her make a "smacking the lips" type of sound too, but not as often. If you're really concerned (which I don't think there's any need to be) just try taking a look at the roof of his mouth to make sure there's no food stuck up there. Other than that he's probably just thinking, "Man those mealies earlier where soo yummy!"

This happened to Pringle a few times. It was usually the cause of the noise.

Nope, no food stuck there. It's almost like a "nervous habit" kind of thing!! haha. He does it when I'm watching him. He'll sit still and make that noise. It's not his chirping or snuffing noise. It sounds like he's swallowing....kind of like he feels uncomfortable. Yet I've heard it when he's alone playing too. ? :dunno: Just kind of a weird thing I guess!

It's hard to offer advice to an experienced hedgeholic such as yourself. You already have thought of and checked eveything I would be able to suggest. Make sure he has plenty of water, and if it is worrying you a lot, then off to the vet with him. If for nothing else than your own peace of mind. :dunno:

Is he by chance laying down when he makes the lip smacking noise? I've had all of my hedgehogs make a light sounding lip smacking like noise when they are relaxed/contently laying on my lap. I've always thought of the sound to mean "I'm happy".

He does make that noise when laying down, but also sitting up when he's just being still. It's never been a sound that made me think, "Oh no..something's wrong!" It's just a very subtle noise, but I just wondered if other hedgies did it too! He was fine at the vet and he has his next checkup in a couple weeks, so I'll bring it up. But, I'd like to think it's a happy/content sound!!
