Hey wats up everyone? I havent been on this forum in MONTHS, not like I did much on it anyway. So today my mom took me to a pet store because I thought they might have hedgehogs there. Well they did, and they weren't in very good condition. I had been thinking about getting another hedgehog. After seeing how these hedgies suffered in the pet store I really wanted to save one. I was thinking about it but my mom told me it was a bad idea because we didnt know the background of the hedgehog, like who bred it and everything else. She said if I wanted to get another one it should be from a breeder that knows what they're doing.
I was thinking about this and I decided that I am really frustrated at all of the hedgehog breeders that just randomly breed hedgehogs and then sell them to pet stores who dont know what they're doing! It puts the hedgie in such a horrible position! Also the person who wants 2 buy it. I mean the poor thing was brought into life by a person who probably doesnt know what they're doing and then they have to live in a horrible small cage which it fills up with poop. (which obviously doesn't get cleaned regularly) Then the person who wants to buy it, shouldnt buy it because they don't know who bred it, if its sick and everything else. If anyone is thinking of breeding and doesn't know how to do it, please please please don't breed. And if you do, make sure you know that the hedgie is going to have a good life with whoever it goes to live with.

Okay thats it, I just really wanted to share that.

I really don't know how this could be any clearer. :applause:

I will agree with that. Even though I am a breeder. :) I did a lot of research before I started breeding, and had several years of experience with hedgehog ownership. I am pretty picky about where my babies go, and am not afraid to tell someone that I don't think that a hedgehog is the right pet for them.

Ugh, you would think this would be common sense by now with ANY animal. However there are still the people out there that think they know everything and are about as smart as a rock. :dunno:

Agreed. I just think it's so sad that people DO have to say obvious things like that, because people think NOTHING of "breeding" animals - like, "Whatever, it's just an animal, how hard could it be?" I think most of the breeders on here have done their homework (or else why would they be here? I know I still learn something new almost every day!), but unfortunately not everyone's like that...especially since hedgies are small mamals...people think there's nothing to it...but there are SO many ups and downs and things to look out for with hedgies...sorry, now I'm just rambling...but it just makes me so angry...

I poured over websites and forums before I decided to buy my first hedgehog. I had also worked with two at a zoo before coming to college and had researched them before but decided to wait to get one seeing as how I had to live in a dorm my first semester. My roommate last year suggested getting one and I agreed. I now have a herd of 15. I've only been breeding for 4 months (doesn't even feel that long) and I've already encountered a rejected litter. If I hadn't prepared myself for the worst I would have died on the spot. Breeding anything is an emotional roller coaster and I hate to see people that are collectors and just do it to do it, especially thinking that it's easy money. Hedgehogs require hard work and dedication. I also rescue and have seen some horrible things of people getting them to get them and then dumping them.....argh don't even get me started on that one!!!Alright I'm done with my soap box.
