Well, I have sad news regarding Spike. They did a barium on him on Tuesday afternoon and after almost 2 hours, the dye hadn't left his stomach. That, and the fact that he hadn't pooped in over 24 hours, told them that he had some sort of blockage. So, they referred us to the ER vet where they did an ultrasound. They still couldn't determine what was causing the blockage. They though it was either something stuck in this stomach like a hairball, a mass/tumor pinching off the small intesting just outside the stomach, or that his sphincter at the bottom of his stomach just ceased to work. They wanted to do surgery to see just was causing the blockage. Considering Spike's age (4ish), the chances of Spike making a recovery from the surgery (50% at best the vet said), and the cost of this surgery (almost $2000 dollars), Brenda and I decided to end Spikes suffering. We had him euthanised at 12:30am on Wednesday morning. I hate doing that, but I know in my heart it was the right thing to do.
He was my first guinea pig a great little guy. I miss him dearly, but I couldn't stand to see him miserable just to keep him around. That would have been very selfish of us. I'll miss the way he chattered when I pet his back and butt. I'll miss him playing with his water bottle and the way he'd grab onto my finger and play tug-o-war. He also loved his chin scratched, and he's lift his head up and close his eyes like he was in heaven. Well, now he is in a better place. When I let my chinchillas out during play time, I know his playmate, Zoe, will be wondering where Spike is. I wish I could explain to her.
