View Full Version : Question about the hissing/popping.

I've done a lot of research on this, and apparently it's a very common thing, stemming from fear or uncertainty mostly.
But I've read several places in which people are saying they're downright -scared- of the noises/motions. I was just wondering...How exactly does it sound? Is it really loud? Does the Hedgie literally POP (jump) up, or does it stay pretty still?
I've been trying to find a website that has audio/video of them. I've been to one site that shows a Hedgie tubing, playing with a TP roll, and barking, but I haven't heard that hissing/seen them do it.
Any help is appreciated!

it's not very loud usually, but it can hurt if you have an EXTREMELY shy/neglected hedgie, they may literally jump in your hand when they make the sound. It's not scary, just startling if you're not expecting it. Popping and clicking are more severe problems that simply huffing (sounds like a sneeze...at least, that's what a lot of people think). Most hedgies huff and puff up once in a while (when they first wake up, if they're startled) but hedgies that pop and click are way tougher to handle and need to be worked with A LOT to improve on their socialization skills. :) hope this helps!

I know when Herbie and Kahlua get upset they will huff. You as an owner will get used to it (they do it all the time...). I always tell Kahlua "trying to be so viscious aren't you?" When I show my hedgies to other people they might get scared and jump back from the hissing or popping....it can be a startling noise at first. And that is the purpose for them making the sound(s) is to scare away preditors. When they get very upset they will actually make a "popping" sound, all their quills will stand up, and they will jump.

Hehe, thanks for all the help. I've heard it's kind of startling, but I know it's something you adjust to.
I'm trying to find a video/audio of it, but I can't lock onto anything. Any ideas on where I could hear/see this at?

I have three rescues that will click and pop when they are having a cranky day. When I first got them it was every single time I tried to touch them. My sister is amazing at getting hedgehogs tamed, don't ask me how. In a little over two months she got the most severe case of popping and clicking in a hedgehog to the sweetest hedgehog in the world. The pop is very startling and like said before it can hurt if they jab into your fingers. hope this helps.

Barking??? Hedgies bark??
Haha, I know, it sounds weird, doesn't it? It's a group of Michigan Hedgehog owners. Run a search for MIHOG (I believe that's what it was), and there are a few videos, ranging from a Hedgehog tubing to running, to making that "barking" noise.
Thanks for the help everyone! I'm just really curious about this!
i watched the video and it almost looks like the guy whos holding it is doing something to make it do that. wow. Thats weird. It REALLY does sound like a bark.
