View Full Version : Sleeping patterns off?

I've been paying close attention to Rouge (not taking my eyes off of her much  ), and I've noticed one thing that's a bit concerning.
Hedgies are supposed to be nocturnal animals. So why is she sleeping when I do and awake when I'm awake? She acts just fine, personality-wise. She wants to explore and snuffle around. Huffs a bit, balls up every now and then, but comes out for a mealie.
Could it just be because she came from 3 hours away and is just stressed? This is my third day with her now, and only now is she napping during the day. Is it harmful at all for her to be doing this?
Thanks in advance!
she might just be messed-up from the trip, or she could just have different sleeping patterns than other hedgies. Have you been playing with her alot during the day? She might have switched her sleeping patterns abit since she knows she will be woken up during the day. I don't know if any of these are right but they are just ideas. Hope that helps a bit on finding out why shes doing that!!

Matt~
Don't forget that she's a baby! They tend to sleep more and wake up at odd times. Chances are if she can sense that you are near, she's going to come out and see what's going on, especially if it involves mealies :)
She'll develop a normal schedule in a few weeks

I've heard of some people who have tried to "break" the nocturnal habit by moving the hedgies feeding time back a bit each night and waking them up during the day. I don't know if it works well or not, but her cycle may be a bit skewed due to the new home and schedule.

Babies usually get up every few hours to eat and of course poop. As she gets older she will be up during the day less often and as an adult probably not at all unless you get her up. I do have a couple of adults that get up to eat during the day.
Trying to break their nocturnal habit is not healthy for them and usually all that will be accomplished is a grumpy, confused and possibly ill hedgehog.

if you feed them in the morning instead of at night they sometimes will reverse their nocturnal habits. some of mine sleep all day and are up at night and some of mine are up all day and sleep at night, so I guess it all up to that paticular hedgie.
