I was watching Snuggles nursing her hoglets this morning and I got to wondering about teat order. I could only see the last two hoglets (she had her butt facing the door). The three hoglets that are larger were towards the front and the two smaller hoglets were towards the back. In pigs I know that piglets will always try to get to the same teat. It's one of the reasons that the runts have a hard time catching up in size.
Does anyone know if it's the same in hedgehogs???

Doesn't appear to be a hard and set rule with hedgehogs, but I know that the babies tend to go for the same general area of nipples at least. If they prefer the ones on the back end, they tend to stick with those, etc. But I have seen babies rotating around at random on various nipples.

In Bridget's current litter, her two albino daugters tend to take the nipples at either end (one at the front, one at the back). I don't know if it's just a coincidence or if they really do try to take the same one every time. The other three (who are smaller) go for any of the ones in the middle.
