Loosing quills from stress?

do hedgehogs loose quills from stress? I was at a petstore earlier today, and there was a hedgie there with tons of quills missing. we said that it had mites, but the petstore guy sais that they had it to the vet and the vet said it was from stress?? is that possible?

Any animal who is stressed or very nervous tends to shed or drool a bit more, so in a hedgie, quill loss would make sense. Do you know if they did multiple skin scrapings on the hedgie or gave it an Ivermectin injection? Allergic reactions will also cause quill loss. Poor hedgie! Does it at least have a place to hide?

well, they have this log house, that only one can fit in, the guy just said they took it to the vet, no skin scrapings or nothing
