What do you all think about naming baby chinchillas that you're going to sell? And how do you think not naming, or naming them makes you or other people look.
---
I kind of thought of this question because someone that was e-mailing me thought it was horrible that I haven't thought of a name for one of my babies born a month ago. And she kept saying that I should "MAYBE name her" and kept sending me lists of baby names, and telling me to name her. bah, annoying.
Sometimes it takes me a while to think of a good name that suits them. But people generally change their names when they buy them (if they're babies) anyways, so why bother?

I name my babies, because I like names. :) However, the new owners are welcome to change their names once they take the chinchilla home.
I guess I never really thought about how it made me look; I relate better to the babies if they have names and not just numbers, but others might feel differently. I like naming them, I like reading baby name lists.
Basically, I name them because *I* want to. And like I said, when they go to their new home, their new owners can call them whatever they want.

I like them to be sold unnamed personally- I guess I veiw it as more professional to sell a baby chinchilla as R19 versus "Dooky Bear" or something. LOL
And then it leaves it up to the owner to decide what to name it :)

I agree with TashaR...I name my babies, too. It's easier to say "hey, chia, come get over here" than it is to say, "hey Rdx3456667, come here." LOL It's really a preference thing. I have a friend that never named any of his animals, its just how he was. I don't think it really matters one way or the other.

I generally always name my babies. Just sometimes picking out a name for them takes a while. I'm just not going to run off and give them any name in the book. I generally do write down the names I give them, put it on the pedigree I send with the new "parents". They will usually call it whatever they want to, then leave the regular name on the pedigree. And after running out of names almost, I generally don't mind going back and filling in a new name that the owners give them now. lol. And just say "okay scratch out the name on the pedigree I gave you and write down what you renamed him/her, and I'll switch it in all my records."

We are naming all of our babies, even the one that we're just fostering for Lani. We have few enough animals to be able to name them and interact with them all daily, and I just cannot call my cute little ones R1, R2, R3, etc. Aside from that, we're hanging on to them until we've shown them, which means months and months, and I refuse to call them R# for that long. Who knows, we may end up wanting to keep one of them to put into our own breeding "program." :)

I generally DON'T name my babies, but I have named 2 and my son has named 2. They need to have some special reason to get named, however. For instance, Lucky (male) is so named because he climbed out of his cage through the 'J' feeder when he was only one month old. He's 'Lucky' to be alive!! We named his sister, Mocha, because she might have felt left out to her brother named and not her.
I think both owners kept the names, but if they didn't that's okay with me. My son just named our two babies that we're handfeeding, but other than that none of the other babies have gotten named. I just call the kits 'honey' or 'sweetie' when I'm weighing or talking to them.

I name all kits born.
Once they go to their new home- The owners can keep or rename the kit.
If I'm going to have the chin for 2+ months, I want to call it something other than "R--"

We generally name all the kits we plan on keeping here for a while. I knew we were keeping Fivel so I gave him a name right away. His brother and sister were not named though because I knew we were going to sell them.
If I sell one that has a name already, I put the name on the pedigree and in my record book. If for some reason the pedigree is lost, the person is probably going to remember the name rather than the kit number.

I know I don't breed but I think I would name the babies and if I couldn't think of a name it would probably be called bob or fred or something liek that... But then I think it would also depend on how many animals you have, too. If you have a lot of kits it might be easier to just give them a number but if theres not as many its more personal so it would be easier to just name them... Thats just my 2 cents....
