View Full Version : For those that rescue
Does this summer seem especially heavy to you? We have 21 rescues right now that need homes and very little interest lately-how is is going out there with other rescue people? Is this a sign of things to come? Too many chins and not enough homes?:dunno:

I predict (unfortunately) many more rescues coming in through the month of august/early september, as so many new college age kids are heading off around now. Even here in Davis, I've seen three notices on boards around here for "free" chins because their owners are either A. moving into a new apartment that won't allow them, B. moving in with new roomies who don't want them, or C. they're sick of them and figure this is a good time to advertise, to catch all the new freshmen heading up here. Sigh. I've called a couple of the numbers, but haven't heard back yet. I didn't want to take in any more chins until after we move, but I'd rather take in a couple than see what happens to free chins in a college town.

Its just so sad, because an apartment that allows pets is so easy to find today. I know, because I'm looking for an apartment, and I'd say 96% allow pets. I don't have any rescues, I'm just commenting.

I took in two about a month ago, but I have noticed a bunch of ads in the classifieds for chins in my area due to the issue Alecia mentioned. With kids going off to college, or just people that can't take care of them any more. A few weeks ago, there were also four chins in three different animal shelters in my area. They've been adopted out, but it's just really rare to find a chin in the shelter, let alone four different chins.

yeah, I usually get lots of inquiries about taking chins in. Then they decide they'd rather have money for them *shrugs*

Dawn it seems like things have been picking up. and I think at the rate people are breeding, and especially those are keep breeding for "just pets" and not to improve on anything- it's going to really pick up soon :(.
I've taken in 2 rescues since Feb. Of course, I'm not huge into rescue- and only do it when I have cage space available, and time to take in a chin who may have med problems/needs to be worked with constantly. I am hoping to be able to have more space next year , and more cages left over to take in more rescues.
I have seen quite a few forsale in PA that people can't keep, and have seen 3 so far listed on Petfinder that are in rescue.

Right now, we have 15 rescues, and I just got an email about 2 more that need a home NOW, so we will have 17 or more rescues by the end of the month, they are coming out of the woodwork!! I don't turn any down, I'd rather buy a couple new cages, so I have lots of chinnies, just wish I had lots of promising adoption applications, I would really love to find great homes for these guys!!

We had gotten in 2 from one person and 1 from another. The latter was a family that had gotten a new pet and the chin just wasnt getting any time. There arent many people here that have chins so have been able to find a home for the single chin. Going to be harder for the other 2 because I wont seperate them. They were born here to a resuced mom and adopted out, the owner had many things come up and once and contacted us. I would rather hold onto these guys for as long as needed rather than seperate them. They have been together since birth and as long as no problems are going to stay that way.
We were supposed to get another that McCaille was picking up but he ended up staying with her.
But I would rather take them in then have them end up in a shelter.

I have been trying to contact a chinchilla rescue groups in New Jersey, New York, etc. I was going to go to a breeder to get another one, but there are too many chins that need a home already. Anybody have any emails or phone numbers for rescue groups around me?
