View Full Version : Crossing the Canadian/American Border
I really hope someone has experience with this. I remember a couple years ago people talking about how it works at the border, but things have changed, and I am now facing a move from B.C. (Canada) to Nevada. I placed an ad in the classifieds on here, as a last resort if she can't move with me, but if I can't take her I will find a family member hopefully.
So basically, does anyone have any experience? Maybe some rescuers have had to do this?
Please, any info will be great.
Thanks.

You need to phone the border office and find out what the regulations are. I do know they need a health certificate to cross with someone on holiday and I have heard it is difficult if not impossible for an American to come to Canada to buy a hedgehog and take it into the US. As far as you moving there and taking a family pet with you I have no idea. I imagine it must be allowed but check with the US customs. :)

This seems to imply hedgehogs can be imported to america with proper documentation.
I'll keep looking

Here is a link to a thread I started not too long ago about crossing the border (Canada to US) with my hedgies. Go down right to the bottom and there are two posts by Roxy- both have links. Hopefully those will tell you what you need to know.

Also, Id contact the border crossing you will be using just in case. It would be a real shame to get there and find out you cant take them across for whatever reason.
Best of luck. Let me know how this turns out for you- since there is the possibility of a move to the US in my future.
Hmmm... those links are very informative. Thankyou.
The U.S. customs brochure states that "Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets and Other pet rodents: There are no requirements of these animals if brought in as pets." Would a hedgehog fall under this catgeory?
I have no problem getting a health certificate, I guess I should do that anyways. It is just SO difficult trying to get in contact with U.S Customs or any government agency. It's hard enough that my fiance is trying to get me down there legally, let alone my zoo.
Thanks for the help.
I'll post here when I get more info from customs.

I knwo that chinchilla's can go over the border without any documentation, but I'm not sure about hedgehogs...call the animal control and they will tell you what you need, probably just a health certificate if anything..:D good luck
