Hi all. I've been reading these forums for about 8 months now--ever since my son came home from college with a hedgie that was looking for a new home (Although, I only registered 2 months ago). One of the women working at the university was giving it away since her son moved out and there was no one to take care of it anymore.

Sophie H was 3 years and 4 months (approx) when he got her. We have learned so much from these forums! We immediately got her off of strictly hedgehog food and onto cat food with chicken, fish, etc., etc. She absolutely loved cantelope once we started giving it to her--I don't think she had ever had it before! I just wanted to thank everyone here--even though I haven't written in to the forums with any questions before, there was a wealth of information here for us and I feel we truly made a difference in her life for the past 8 months. I also want to thank Katie who I've e-mailed with, since we live in the same general area, and has given me information on vets in the area.

Unfortunately, over the past few months Sophie H became ill with a severe abscess, ended up on an experimental antibiotic since the regular antibiotics weren't helping at all, and needed surgery to remove the abscess and clean everything out. She went downhill drastically after that and developed 1 very large tumor and 4 smaller ones. Her health would not permit any more surgery--they said that she'd never be able to tolerate the anesthesia. After syringe feeding her for a few weeks, and watching her struggling to breathe she had to be put to sleep last Monday. We just couldn't watch her suffer anymore.

I THINK I've added an attachment with her picture--just want to show her off to everyone. I'm not sure if I did it right or not.

Thanks again for all of the info-------------Joan

I'm so sorry about the loss of Sophie. You got the photo on there and what a beautiful hedgie she was! Sounds like you really took wonderful care of her. I'm sure she's up in Hedgie Heaven eating lots of cantelope and looking down on you saying, "thank you for taking care of me". :sunrise:

RIP Sophie! You found a wonderful care taker in your last months.

((HUGS)) Joan! It doesn't take long for these little quilled ones to become part of our lives, so sorry for your loss

Joan I am so sorry about Sophie. This forum is full of wonderful people and ideas and I am glad some of us were able to help you at this time. You were a great hedgie mom and I am sure Sophie is thanking you for all of the cantelope. She is up there with my Pringle who I had to put to sleep too. I hope they are good friends.
