View Full Version : Smelly Odor

My hedgehog is about 10 months old and I have noticed some changes in her recently.
She has always drooled while sleeping. Generally, its just a little spot smaller than a dime. Lately though, she has been soaked when she wakes up from her upper chest to her neck. I've noticed it smells really bad-this is the first "odor" I've ever smelled. I've given her a bath but it did no good because she smelled again when she woke up.
Any ideas? Anything would be helpful.
Thanks,
Jessica

It could be a tooth problem or is there any possibility she has something stuck in the roof of her mouth. A vet visit is required. :)

This has been going on for about 2 weeks so I brought her to the vet last week and they didn't find anything.

What is your hedgehog's diet? Anything that has a strong scent or taste to it? Could she have annointed on something? Hedgehogs get dental disease just like any other animal.

Hi Jessica
We are keeping you and your hedgie in our thoughts and prayers. Did the vet do a complete blood work up, CBC with diff and a chemistry profile? I know this way they can review her major organ function to rule out certain things and rule out any infection. Sometimes it takes a few visits to finally find out what the problem is. Can they do a culture and sensitivity on the slavia? Just some thoughts. From my own experience I would suggest the blood work up and complete mouth exam. The vets can tell a lot from the blood work up.
Keep us posted and good luck.

I know that this is probably a rediculous suggestion, but, is it possible that she may be teething, thus causing her to drool excessively.

if the food has fish in it that may cause an odor in its stool but Idont know if it could be anything esle

I would suspect a dental problem, like an abcess or impacted food or an oral mass, although she is a little young for that, or maybe a sinus problem. 10 months is beyond teething age.
If the vet did not find anything on the first visit you must return and tell them to try again. What you have described is not normal and will most likely continue to get worse if it hasn't gotten better by now. They might need to sedate her to really get a good look in her mouth.

I have checked her everyday and noticed that over the past 2 she hasn't been drooling or smelly. I already called the vet back and made another appointment.
--I have never seen her anoint with anything and she has been on the same foods since I brought her home.
She doesn't act any different so I'm hoping for the best.
Thanks,
Jessica
my fingers are crossed that shes all better whatever that was! :)
