I just got my baby Scoops yesterday and I noticed that when he got up to play he was scratching a lot. He does need a bath from coming from the breeders (she used some sort of wood shaving and I am using liners), still has the paint marks on him, and needs his nails trimmed. She said he was in the quilling stage and I did find a lot of tiny quills on me from the car ride home. Does quilling make them scratch?

Sure does! Those new quills coming in are irritating the skin, so what else is there to do but give it a good scratch!
An oatmeal bath is a good idea to help soothe the skin!

Oatmeal bathes and Vitamin E oil worked really well for Bosco and I when he was going through quilling. My other two (Murdoc and Herb) seem to be going through an extended 1 year quilling. Quills fall out like crazy- but there are always new ones coming in. I do the same with them, and it really seems to make them feel better.

Ok, since I last posted this Scoops' quilling seemed to be calming down. Now all of a sudden the past couple of days he is losing those small quills like crazy. Does quilling go through a beginning, middle, and end stage?

Yes it definitely does. Anytime you have a hedgie under 6 months itching and irritable look at their back closely. If you can see quills in different stages of growth it's most likely quilling. I LOVE Aveeno Oatmeal bath for this reason. :)

When we got our hedgie Emma, at eight weeks, she seemed like such a grouch! We continued to give her attention and spend daily time with her regardless. Now at a bit over a year old she is the sweetest little girl!
Good luck with your new hedgie. Remember the quilling stage is just a stage!

It's really not so bad. They just get a bit huffy bc it is sore for them. The worst part, I think, is picking up all of the quills they lose. I hate stepping on them when I drop one of the carpet by accident!!!
