Hey everyone!

I have a quick question about liners and blankets (and towels, actually) - would polar fleece make a good liner and/or blanket and/or towel? Or are the threads too grabby for little feet?

Inquiring minds want to know! :D

Polar fleece or velux is just fine as liners. Terry cloth/towels is no good as little toes can get caught in the loops. :)

I've used flannel and cotton materials before too. Just watch out for their little toes and if there is even a chance that there are loops for toes to get caught in don't use it.

So does polar fleece make for a good towel as well? I'm not sure about it's absorbant properties.

And if I decide to make a liner, can I just lay down a layer, or should I actually sew it together? I'm thinking the sewing option is the correct one, but I want to ask to be sure.

Is *ANY* loops in the fabric a danger, or only loops of a certain size?

Any sized loop is dangerous as is loose threads or unfinished edges. Fleece and velux do not need to be hemmed. Cotton, flannel and any tightly woven fabrics are fine also but do need to be hemmed.

IMO the best liners are flannel top, absorbent inner layer of fleece, batting, or blanket cloth and then fleece on the back.

I use flannel as towels. Fleece absorbs ok but flannel is much better. I use baby receiving blankets as towels.

If the loop is large enough for a nail to go through, then there is a risk that they will catch their nail.

Another concern is to choice a fabric type that will not unravel. Any lose strings (or hair for that matter) are a danger to hedgehog legs. Hedgehog legs have an uncanny nack for getting strings wrapped around them, cutting into the skin and cutting off the blood supply to the leg/foot.

If you decide to sew a liner, it is best to create it so that the threads are internal and less of a risk to a leg.

*cough*
I don't think this is a problem for most, but if you find that your hedgie is a digger, keep a careful eye on the condition of the bedding. If you ever see a hole in a piece of bedding, go ahead and remove it. :(

ok heres my two cents! I just got my second hedgie Lia (Ari i'm sad to say went to hedgie heaven) and am now using a cage liner, and I'm lovin it! Some help to you my abstract way of making a liner(hehe) take two pieces of flannel (WARNING: make pieces bigger than your mesurements, i made a big booboo w/ that) sew them together but leave one end as it is (wide side not length side). Then you cut a peice of fleece out(a little smaller than the flannel pieces) and STUFF it inside. then if you measured wrong like i did or something or other you sew the ends together or in my case that i was out of my flannel, cap it with a piece of fleece!

Hmmmmm........ A bit more sewing work than I thought..... Well, considering the huge sewing project I have on the go (stunning Halloween costume!), I doubt I'll bein the mood to do more sewing for a bit once I get that finished. Maybe I'll just go out and buy one....... :)
