while building my breeding herd i made sure i get many top quality, herd improvement standard chins. i know i hear over and over again that you should have good quality standards to put with your mutes. as a result, over fifty percent of my kits this year are standards, v/cs, and possible v/cs. i sometimes wonder if i went a little over board with the standards...
i was wondering what percent of the herd was standards with small breeders? how do you feel you best use them in your program?
more than a thirs of my chins are herd improvement standards.

I have only 1 male and 4 females.
all my others are mutes, But when i go to the Mansfield show i plan on hopefully picking up more stand males and a few other girls..
the herd imporvers, dont they go the girls you want to impove on the babies. and not your whole herd?

Right now, I have 12 breeding animals. Of those, 5 are standards. So 41 2/3 % of my herd is standard... I will be adding both more standards and mutations to my herd in the next few months- though so my precentage will change.

I think a lot of it has to do with "What are you wanting to do with your herd?"
If you want to breed the "neat colors" then I don't think you need to have as many standards as someone who is trying to breed top show quality animals.(even if you are breeding for top show quality mutations.
I think that if you want to produce top show quality chins consistantly, year in year out. you need a high percentage of herd improvement standards in your herd.
Over 80 % of my herd are standards.

I have approx 25 in breeding currently, of those 2 are velvets, one TOV pink-white, one ebony, 3 beiges and 1 violet. My upcoming breeders are all standards except one mosaic. So will be over 80% standards. I feel you need to have an excellent standard base then bring in colors. The whites, ebony, violet etc that I have now is to produce a few babies of color for sale and possibly back into herd for breeding.
