I just had a discussion not too long ago with someone about these topics.

Do chin people expect too much from people?

I see people asking to transport cihns for them- and won't even drive 5 minutes to meet up with someone. I see breeders saying things along the lines of "I will be in ___ and can meet there for the fee of gas".. Umm HELLO- aren't you already driving there? Why do you need gas money then?

I think chin people expect too much. I don't expect people to deliever my chins to my door step, nor do I expect to make people pay me to take a chin where I am already going. I have met people 1 1/2 hours out of my way to give them their kit, and didn't charge a cent for gas money. I have NO problem meeting people- but the least they can do is drive atleast halfway, IMO.

IF you don't have a car, and can't meet me to pick up your animal- how are you going to get it to an emergency vet?

Jason and I can normally drive up to two hours in any direction in Ohio for no gas fee. That's how it's always been.

Recently I've had requests for chins to get to the outskirts of Indiana and Georgia. I know I can't get out there right now...because of the cost of gas.

I bring chins to shows, too. If I'm going to a certain area already and someone would need a chin transported from me or another breeder I would not charge for gas. That's ridiculous.

I've also had to drive more than half way as the seller to meet with the buyer. That irks me, too sometimes.

I totally agree with you about the no car thing, too.

I think you're right...some chin people expect too much.

I've been thinking that for quite a few months now. I don't ask for gas money, unless I have to go out of the way from where I am going to. I only deliver to doorsteps if the people are in the same area as I will be or if are going to be in an area I'll be at the same time.

I think it is kind of rude to personally ask for gas money if you plan to be somewhere already, or to ask for someone to deliver to your doorstep, which happens to be out of their way, for nothing.

I've never dealt with this because the people I've dealt with have always been pretty reasonable about it. I do admit I've planned entire vacations around chin deliveries (like the 3,000 mile Las Vegas trip, heh) but given the cost of gas right now, if I were to sell I probably wouldn't meet more than an hour away for just one chin.

As it is we're all trying to carpool up to Langley for the show - it is just too expensive!

Unfortunately, I'm interested in buying a chin, but I need an RR for it. Also, I can't pick up a chin because of my aunt and uncle's schedules with work, but int he case of an emergency I know I could rely on them to get me wher eI need to be as quickly as possible. Also, when I ask people to deliver, I offer to pay them gas money to compensate for however far they have to drive out of their way to get here. I don't feel that I expect a lot, and I'm willing to give compensation for the fact that I can't meet people somewhere.

megan, i think you are right on the money - no pun intended.

while i have had sellers meet me and or deliver chins, the ability to physically GET the chin in a manner that works comfortabley for me AND for the seller is key to my being able to get any given chin.

i have delievered chins to shows, and have been willing to drive some (for no gas money; my real problem is time) and i also do not charge to hold the chins for a few weeks or months until the show. i figure that if this is a person i am willing to sell to, it is worth my while to 'board' the chin for how ever long is needed before they can get it.

When I got my two standard chins, I drove 3 hours to get them, for my second two from Megan we met roughly halfway, then I had one chin shipped in from Cali to the pet shop with their shipment, and the rest I got from Whitewoods only an hour away. I always only look in ads that say NJ, PA, or NY because thats whats near me.

I think that with rising gas prices, long distance purchases will be increasingly difficult. Its just so hard to get around now. Luckily I found my chins before the craziness started. I dont know if its the same everywhere but here ppl are definently on edge about traveling. I breed gerbils and I used to deliver for free locally but now Im only doing pick-ups. I feel bad about it but at $4 a gallon and rising, what else can I do?

I'd like to think that I am more than willing to help someone out with the transport of chins or other animals, but so far I haven't participated in any transfers.

I'm going to Mansfield at the end of next month, and have offered several times to take chins there and/or bring them back. I expect only the same regard in return...if I'm already traveling somewhere, I will pick up or take chins along with me, as long as I know they're going to good homes. I want only to be given the same treatment...

I'm not sure if I expect too much from people...as I see it, if I take part in a transfer or two, and maybe in the future require something similar, maybe someone will return the favor? I don't know...maybe I'm blind to the world's true ways. My focus is only to give a furry friend a better home, or even just another home.

I will travel about an hr or a bit more with no fee for a chin I am selling. If I am already going somewhere I do not mind bringing along a passanger for no extra charge. I would also be willing to hold and deliver a chin to a show if need be.
On the other hand when i buy a chin I have never asked anyone to help with transport. I personally like to visit the place I'm getting my chin from. We have traveld 7hrs one way to pick up chins and then 7hr home in one day. Now I have bought a few chins from places my other breeder friends are already going to and they bring back my chins with them. But I always chip in with gas even if they were already going in the first place. I can understand time concerns with people having to travel to pick up their chins so if they can find a way to get the chin to them and are willing to pay the other persons added expences then i see nothing wrong with it. But to ask someone to pick up your chin or transport it for free is asking too much. If you can't afford to get the chin to you then you have no business getting it.

I'm not a chin person but I am a breeder of hedgehogs. I will travel within the state of Illionis and a bit into Iowa for a new hedgie owner but that's because I'm in college and go home once a month because I'm a 4H leader in my home town. I see nothing wrong with taking an animal with me if I'm already going that way. Now I have driven more then 6 hours one way to pick up rescues. I have never asked a breeder to drop off an animal, I have always personally picked up my hedgehogs. I think fellow breeders understand more then buyers since some of them feel that you are obligated to get the animal to them whatever the cost or hassel.
