Ok, i posted this in the debate section, because i dont want to get yelled at or anything, i just want to know honestly how everyone thinks/feels.

i was reading a post on another website about trading and swapping chinchillas,I.E. "looking to trade my standard chinchilla for a beige female", "looking to swap my male standard for a standard female", etc....

as im reading these, i thought, HOW HORRIBLE!!! i couldnt EVER imagine in a million years getting rid of Andey, let alone "Trading" him for a female, or a prettier color. Why not get that specific color in the first place? why not get a female instead of a male in the first place? How could you just "Trade" your chinchilla like it was a piece of bubble gum or candy that you traded with friends when you were a kid?! i mean, a chinchilla is a living breathing creature, that has feelings, not a baseball card.

Is it just me that feels this way? is it only people who have lots of chins that swap/trade? if so, do you care less about a certain chin because you have so many of them? Why would you trade in the first place? dont you miss your chin when they are gone? dont you feel bad?

Again, i dont want to be yelled at, im just curious how people feel, and if you have "traded" a chin, did you feel bad? did you regret it after it was done?

I think that when people post a trading ad it's more for breeding purposes than really trading a beloved animal. Now, I'm not saying that breeders don't love all of their animals, but most breeder's (that I know of) are more interested in better the chin population as a whole, rather than breed for the **** of breeding. I personally don't see anything wrong with it...if a breeder has a pregnant female who has 3 male kits, she might need to trade for another female. When some breeders put up kits or chins for sale, I've been told that they use the number/letter system (R60, R20, etc.) as a means of identification, and would rather not give them each a name because then they may get really attached to them. Now, I'm not sure if I'm correct in this, but that is how I feel about the trading issue. And if I've offended any breeders, please feel free to tell me how you feel.

Well said Blackset. I have my "pets" and I have my breeders. Both are special to me, but I wouldn't have a problem selling/trading my breeders if the need arises. After all, how do you think chins are spread? If no one was willing to sell any of their chins, no new people could have one.

Correct me if I'm wrong with this guys, but I really think there is VERY little trading going on. It's highly unlikely that I'll find someone else who has the specific color or sex that I want.

I don't have a lot of trouble selling my breeders or kits, but there are some chins that aren't worth much, but I wouldn't sell them for $200. They are just too special to me. One of my son's friends didn't understand why I wouldn't sell him a chin that I only paid $25 for. I just told it that it wasn't the money, but Timmy wasn't going just anywhere. I'm quite attached to him and I really like him so he would have to go to a special home.

I have a few breeders, though, that I wouldn't have ANY problem getting rid of! Some chins just have nicer personalities and you bond with them more and those breeders I would have trouble selling.

BTW I know a lot of breeders that name all of the animals they have inr breeding. I name all of my breeders, but I don't name all of the kits. I have trouble thinking of THAT many names!!

I think its okay to trade them, as long as its to a good person. I agree with what everyone said about not being as attached to the breeders. Its different to if you were thinking of trading your most treasured pet chin.

I breed & have several chinchillas(breeding & non) & feel it is more along the lines to get what better suits you & your breeding program. (like what colors you have too many of, if one doesnt get along how you'd planned, if its not the quality you'd expected, ect.) If you have kits/adults/whatever that is tradable & someone else has something your interested in & also wants something different for his or her breeding program then why not just trade? If your both selling anyways, & agree to the trade why not just cut the money out of the deal & even trade for something. (or pay the difference?) No losses.
I have never traded an animal that is an adult & that has grown up with me. I will mainly perpose the idea of trading a kit or two here & there that were BORN here & i will be selling anyways.(i only offer trades when im in the market for some newbies of course.) I traded a nice homo ebony a few months back for a nice pure violet & both of us were looking for what eachother had, so we traded. =] I couldnt be more please with the turn out & neither could she.. but yes, in some cases im sure the turn out isnt always bliss. (thats what you cant just trade to who ever.. you need to take matters into consideration JUST like you would when selling the pet & or buying a new one for your herd.)

Now, i could see it being wrong or fround upon if you had two chinchillas only & up & decided one wasnt good enough & you were just sick of it/wanted a different color/ect. (i have MANY here that will NEVER be traded & more than likely NEVER be sold! They mean too much to me & or they are WAY too good of quality/attitude/or have been with us too long to just trade.) I could also see it being bad if someone breeder or not was trading everything they had for newbies all the time.. but you dont see it often. (im normally leary about trades on adults, but kits i totally can see where whomever is coming from if they were going to be sold anyways.) Its worth a shot to see what someone else has that you may want/need to better your herd.

I think things change a touch when you become a breeder verses a pet owner & some pet owners dont understand until they too become a breeder.

Ok, so breeders just try not to get attached to their "breeder" chins? i can understand that, because if you got "Attached" how on earth would you ever sell them? i guess my first thought was it was people just "trading" their chinnies, i didnt exactly think about the breeding situation, but that is just what i wanted to clarify. hehe, i could never be a breeder, im a sucker and would wind up getting attached to everyone.

It is really hard & im not at all saying that its not hard to part with them. no matter what you become attached.. its just with kits you know you will be parting with them from day one & that makes it all the merrier.

(if you trade for something awesome & that you wanted/needed to better your herd it makes it THAT much better/easier) but i wouldnt ever say i dont become attached to every chinchilla we have homed here for any amount of time, short or not. I always have a hard time parting with our rescues too.. hahah, i got all 20 knowing they wouldnt be staying, but everyone we sold was not easy.

But all in all breeding does change you a bit no matter what. I just dont think us breeders love ours ANY LESS! :hearts:
