Recently, my chinchilla escaped from its cage and jumped from the third floor of our house down to the stairs of the second floor of our house (see picture for reference) which was the distance of approximately 6 feet. After the jump I caught the chinchilla and I realized that there was blood around the chinchilla's lips. I worked my best to clean it off but the next day, its lips were swollen (see picture for reference) and it constantly scratched and licked its lips. Not only did I notice that its lips went swollen but the pellets that I fed it the day before looked like they had been eaten and vommitted back in mixed with some other material (see picture for reference).

Also, is keeping the chinchilla in a cage with another one safe at the moment?

Below are some pictures that I took that could be used for reference. If you would need anymore pictures to get more clear of a view of the situation, PLEASE message me @ valmont.tsang@gmail.com as i will do the best I can for my chinchilla's health.

If you are so worried....GO TO THE VET...The picture of the lip swelling tells us nothing as we are not vets. (there is one on here, but even he can't diagnose through pictures) There is no way we can tell you if there are internal injuries. As for the pellets...mine look like that if they get wet. You really should just take your chin into the vet.

Chinchillas are incapable of vomiting. The pellets are probably just wet. With the swelling in the mouth it is more than likely he hit his teeth pretty hard. If he/she (? you said IT so not sure the sex) is pawing at his/her mouth, obviously there is pain involved.

I'd be getting to a vet.

ok,

1. the pellets look like they are wet, maybe peed on?

2. the jump looked far, plus the wood, i def. think the chinhilla hurt himself.

3. from the looks of the big openings between the railings on the second level, the chinchilla does NOT need to be playing on that level, being as he can get between those railings, and jump to the next level, PLEASE move the play area somewhere else, so this doesnt happen again.

4. if there is blood and he is scratching and pawing at his lip, he is most def. HURT. please call your vet, and get him in ASAP, if you dont have a vet, FIND one, and find one that deals with chinchillas, and is knowledgeable about chinchillas.

I agree with all of the above. Please take you chin to the vet. And please chin proof his play area.

I hope your baby is ok!! I see everyone is telling you to chin proof his play area but as you said in the post "Recently, my chinchilla escaped from its cage" so i quessing he usually isnt anywhere near the steps during play time he escaped when this accident happened! Rachel

At the risk of upsetting you people, PLEASE READ the original post, Valmont said "escaped from cage" not "jumped from play area", you are chastising this person for an accident. I have chins that escape from their cage or leap from my arms and hit a concrete floor, they bust their lip, it bleeds a little, it swells and they paw at it and lick their lip for a couple days and everything is fine....wouldn't you if you busted your lip!!!

Valmont, how is your chinnie doing? He should be seen by a vet to ensure that the teeth were not damaged in the fall, and that there were no internal injuries...chins hide illness and injuries well until it is too late. His mouth will probably be sore for a couple of days and he may not want to eat pellets so make sure there is plenty of soft loose hay to munch on, and make sure he is drinking.

Is your Chin running around at all? I would worry more about the legs than the lip, which will heal, like anyone's would. If "it' is running around be grateful, not worried -- it'll be ok.

That is quite a long fall and right onto a hard solid surface. Does your chin seem like it's favoring a leg? Is the water in the water bottle going down? The mouth is very good at self healing, but have you checked to see if any teeth were broken. How old is the chin? Have you offered a treat to see if your chin is willing to eat ANYTHING? Chins can hide their ailments pretty well, and the fact that the lip is swollen AND you don't think your chin is eating.. a trip to the vet would be warranted. Good luck.
