Hey all!!!!!

As some of you may or may not know, I don't have a hedgehog quite yet but will be getting one late October, early November from a breeder......I refuse to get one from a pet store because most pet stores do not give the proper care they need and deserve. In this time we will be getting all the stuff we need for the new baby.

I NEED to read up on everything I need to know about hedgehogs so that I have the proper husbandry practices in order to provide the best care possible.

I know there are proper and improper ways of doing things and both of these ways can be found on the internet. There is a lot of conflicting advice out there.

I was wondering if someone could please direct me towards some care sheets with the proper ways of doing things so that I can learn the proper way instead of doing something that was suggested to me and then finding out I am doing it wrong. Thank you muchly. :)

First off, let me say thank you! for researching before you buy. There are so many people who just rush into it and find out that a hedgehog isn't the right pet for them. :)

I am a bit biased, but my website has most of the information you will need to properly care for a hedgehog. www.fairfaxhedgehogs.com

I would also highly suggest:

www.hedgehogcentral.com -Has good information on care, and is great for learning about different hedgehog colors.

www.hedgehogworld.com -A site that was built and is maintained by hedgehog breeders across the country. It has wonderful care information and even a forum.

www.freewebs.com/thehedgieden -Nancy makes wonderful hedgie bags, hats, blankets, wheel, carriers, etc... :)

www.hedgehogvalley.com -Tig wrote "The Hedgehog Primer" which is the most to book on hedgehog care. I would highly suggest purchasing it.

www.pogstarhedgehogs.com -Has great care information, and is best known for its food reviews.

www.petinfopackets.com/hedgehogs/hedgehoginfopacket.html -A great review of all the basics of hedgehog care.

Well, I think that should be plenty of information. :) I am probably forgetting a couple of other good websites, but I would start with these and you should learn plenty.

Thank you Super Chin!!!!!!! I haven't gone to any of those websites yet but I will get there in the next few days. :) Your help is muchly appreciated.

As for researching first before bringing a hedgehog home, I completely understand the situation. I am a moderator on a reptile forum website and I see so many people that rush out to buy a reptile because they are "cute and cool". They don't do their research first and end up with a whole bunch of problems because of not giving the proper husbandry. :sob:

I would like to avoid this at all costs for the hedgehog. It's less stress for them and me. I would feel really bad if something went wrong with the hedgehog and it was my fault. Being an animal lover, I just would not be able to live with that guilt.

I also have care information on my website. Also the FAQ here are full of new information I wrote.

I use the HWS care sheet for my customers. It covers the basics really nicely but doesn't drag on forever (which my website and FAQ's tend to do) ;) You can get it at http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org I think

If it's not on that site it's in the files on their Yahoo list and you can find that link on the HWS page.
