Hedgehogs in Alabama? Legal or not?

I moved to central Alabama recently and with dismay the pet store clerk told me they are "banned" in the state. Then I heard it wasn't enforced except for pet stores.

Which is the case? Is it hopeless or not?

Alabama: In the past there has been anecdotal information about hedgehogs being illegal in Alabama as pets, but we have heard nothing concrete and, as far as we know, they are legal and sold in pet shops throughout the state.
