Today I took 5 of my 6 hedgies for a vet appointment, Andover is 45 minutes away from my home but since they are listed on the site as a hedgie vet I went ahead and drove to see them.... I was very upset upon arrival. I had to wait 1 week to even get in to see the hedgie vet and when I got there I was informed that the hedgie vet was out for the week. They then told me they'd see if another vet would see the hedgies, 1 was going in for a check to see if she was pregnant, 1 was going in for her post natal check up and 3 babies for there 1st check up, 1 having an absess on his back. I was told by the vet(***** *****) that she didn't want to deal with the hedgehogs today and that it required sedating the hedgies to even examine them. With that I picked up my carriers and left. How is it even considered ethical to turn away a patient that has an appointment, specially when that patient is sick (the absesses) and getting worse, if I'd known that I was going to be blown off I would have gone to someone else sooner rather than wait a week to get in and see her.

OH honey I'm soooo sorry!!! I would have blown up I think. I was upset the first time I went to the vet and they broke out the massive gloves used for derranged cats. I would look into getting another vet ASAP.

More than anything I think I was more upset at the fact that they didn't want to deal with them and I already had an appointment, if it hadn't been for my regular vet Yoda would've had to wait 2 weeks for a vet to see him, and I for one don't wait 2 weeks to see my doctor if I'm sick.

That's crazy that you had an appointment and that happened!!! It's not like they didn't know what kind of animals you were bringing in!!! Very unacceptable...I'd definitely be looking elsewhere!!!
Good luck with your poor sick hedgie!

I took my hedgies to the vet I use for my dogs and ferrets, and he was wonderful, the poor baby has mites so we're treating them with Ivermectin and will treat again every 2 weeks for a total of 3 treatments. The medication is supposed to paralyze the mites so they can't feed and then they die (hopefully suffering during this period), it doesn't kill the eggs though so we're going to give 3 treatments in 2 week icrements because it takes mites 3 weeks to mature to a reproducing state. The vet was wonderful he explained all risks, told us what side effects to watch for, explained the process, even showed us the mites under the microscope (my 5 year old loved that part) I am so glad that I found this doctor.

I hope everything goes well for your hedgie. I am glad you found a vet that explains everything so you understand the whole treatment.
As for the other vet I would call in a complaint to their office so this does not happen to anyone else.
Our vets' office has a policy "If you have a complaint tell us so we can address the problem. If you are happy with us tell your friends about us."

That's great to hear they are on the road to recovery!! Are you having the rest of your herd treated as well? Let us know how everyone does. You're little ones are sooo cute and sweet looking :)

Sorry about your vet problem. How sad. I experinced a similar thing before I found my great vet. The first vet wouldn't even look at Pringle unless he was sedated and left me in the room to cry over the decision (first time I ever had to do it) by myself.

Yes I am treating everyone...it was interesting, we got to take everyone up to the vet to get weighed because we don't have a scale yet and my husband decided to get one online and everyone was so interested in them, we got to keep answering questions, and since I had Togape and the babies some actually got to hold them because they don't spike up once you're done with the actual picking up process.
