My vet has put Blizzy on another new medicine called Metronidazole. I gave it to her and not more then 30 seconds later she was doing this :Pukey: . Has anyone else had this problem before?? She has never had this reaction before to anything.

Pretty sure that Nancy (Teasels Mom) had the same happen to one of her girls that was on Metronidzaole. Maybe she can give some insight.

What's your hedgie taking metronidazole for?
Metronidazole is good for clearing up diarrhea and giardia. It's also incredibly bitter! Believe me, if you tried it you would be sick too. I've had it spit back in my face and it was not pleasant.
Oliver, Annabelle and Tico were on it when they had giardia (the first two) and campylobacter (the last one)
You can try to hide it in a food with a strong flavor, but you need to make sure the hedgie eats all of it to get the proper dosage.
My vet mixes up a chicken flavored compound to hide the taste and everyone loved it! They didn't know they were getting meds and you can get the flavor compound in about 15 different flavors. Ask your vet if they have it available.
PS.. the flavor compound doesn't come in mealworm flavor. I asked :)

Yes my Kesia did that too. You have to make sure it is mixed with enough of a food or treat that it masks the taste. Hers was even supposed to be liver flavoured.

Thanks. Now that I know that it is flavor related, thats a good thing. She is on it for her cancer.

My favorite compounding pharmacy (odd, but where I live there are four that I know of - within about 20 miles of here) doesn't have "mealworm" flavor, either - and yep, I asked as well. However, they do lots of specialized compounding for zoos and have several specialized flavors, including one that's supposed to taste like decomposing flesh (I passed when that was offered as an option).

They flavoring that my hedgies love best (I took a couple in and we had a "tasting"), and which won, quills down, is called "Sweet Liver." I've never had a desire to taste it, but the kids tell me it's grand by how fast they attack the syringe.

All of that being said, Miss Margie was put on Metronidazole for her stomach problems and, because the med is so bitter, we ended-up mixing it with the "sweet liver" and "fruit punch" and then injecting it into mealies in order to get her to eat it.

Isn't it fun to have such suboorn little critters?

My girls were on the injectable form. At the vets office they both balled up real nice and I had a clear "shot" at an open area in between quills. At home they just sat there so I had to spread apart their quills and hopefully not stick myself.
Neither one liked the flavored oral med which we did try first. That is how I found out that hedgies can spit real good.
